Hello coaches, I am at a small private school of just around 325 students. We are notorious for starting school very early in August and this year we won't be able to have true 2-a-days because of how the school calendar falls. Normally we have gone 3pm-8pm , 2 hours on, 1 hour off, 2 hours on but that won't be possible this year since the kids will be in school from 8:00am-2:30pm. Just out of curosity, how would you structure your pre-season? Mind you as well, we bus our kids to our practice field which is 1.5 miles away and rent our home field so we don't have the luxury of just walking outside our school building to practice. We do have a big patch of propert we could do a walk through on but not a full practice. We have approximately 35 kids on varsity and another 25-30 on JV. We have been fortuante to be successful, winning 2 state titles in the last 10 years but this is the earliest we have ever started school. I know there is guys out there who don't even do 2-a-days anymore so I am curious to hear your thoughts.
thanks in advance, Kyle

Honestly, in that situation, I think you just go with your normal after school routine from the beginning. Iowa has essentially eliminated two-a-days anyway so that's what we do even if practice starts before school does.

If 2-a-days aren't necessary...or possible, don't do them. It's not carved in granite somewhere that you must do them.

kylem56 I would suggest you could add time to practice first two weeks (before first game week), say half an hour, and-or do Walk-thrus before school on your "patch of propert (sic)."

In our state, we are allowed "practice days" so we could essentially make up lost time, its just the first time we have ever experienced the calendar not allowing us to do so

What does your summer look like?
Most schools around here don't go 2-a-days, but they all go 14-22 hours a week for most of the summer anyways. If you need the work, get them going in the summer.

We don't have 2-a-days in Iowa, as noted, so most competitive schools work all summer like this. Last year we did 4 days a week, 90 minutes FB, 60 minutes lifting, occasionally 7v7 on Sundays. We were practicing at 6 am to avoid any heat issues or work schedule issues for kids or non-teaching coaches. I loved it. We came out of the summer pretty much ready to hit the ground running. That's not even close to 14-22 hours / week, though, I dunno how you pull that off. Anyway, rambling, do summer practices if you can.

Not sure what your state association rules are regarding pre-season practices but I was always faced with early August school starts (usually second week of August if you include those famous "in-service" days) after working in small private schools for most of my career. My schedule went something like this:
First week of August - State mandated acclimatization practices M-T-W (helmets only). AM-Conditioning circuit; PM-Football. Th-F-S (Uppers). AM-Defense; PM-Offense.
Second week: (in-service) No AM practice. PM practices starting at 3. M-T-W-Th-F Football teaching/Strength/Film 1 hour; Evening practices at 4:30 (2.5 hours). M-Defense. T-Offense. W-Defense. Th-Offense. F-Defense. S-Double session - AM Offense; PM Special Teams
Third week: After school practices start.

Just cause the other teams do it, doesn't mean you have to..
How much access to your players do you have in the summer?
We get padded camps, so after we leave FCA Camp, I don't put pads on till the 5 days after the state says we can. We work on us.

Could you do a walk through before school, and then run a three hour practice after school for the first week? You can get a lot of work done in three hours. THen back off into a more normal in-season like schedule.

I'n not sure what y'all damnyankees can do, but summer 2+ hour practices are pretty much verboten down here. Plus I can hardly stand to be in my classroom for 3 hours straight....
2-a-days fix some of the heat problems, but with so much available outside of the August-November calendar why do we need to have these marathon days of work??
Are we as coaches that inefficient? Install, lift, condition; then building once pads are allowed.
2-a-day/3-a-day were: -back when kids played multiple sports -kids worked on the weekends and in the summer -kids 'needed' to be conditioned -- I.E. no summer training -coaches were tired of being home/working their second job
