Not a coach, just a parent. My son has been playing club ball for 7 years. He’s going into Jr. year in HS. I’m looking for a private Linebacker coach in the Phoenix Arizona area. I’ve looked and failed to find anyone on CoachUp and Lessions.com. Can anyone make a recommendation as to where I may find someone local to me? Too many of the coaches out there are too general. I’m looking for someone that specializes in LB’er. Thanks!

Retired coach, 50 years. Not sure why you would have your son playing on a club team, but there are likely a number of qualified high school football coaches at various schools in the Phoenix area who could coach your son up in playing LBer. When you say too many of them are too general what do you mean? What are you looking for?

i would think that how you coach a lb depends at least partially on what defense you run, and which lb position he plays.
also, different coaches and staffs have different things they coach that depends on their philosophy.
just getting a "lb coach" sounds pretty general to me.
just my 2 cents.

Most. Not all. Of private trainers I see on social Media do a bunch of ladder or other quick feet drills which in my opinion transfer very little to the actual game. They are just trying to look good to make more people hire them. Want your kid to get coached? Take him to a quality high school in your area and let the coaches work. He’s probably already at one….

to expand on my earlier post - i coached lb's for most of my 34 year career. but i coached them differently than just about everyone else. i remember seeing 2 (maybe 3) schools in 34 years that coached similar technique and philosophy.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to get a private coach. I think it’s uncommon in our world a little. But my son plays guitar and golfs and we have gotten him lessons in both.
I bet you could find someone with a little digging. Try reaching out to any small colleges near you. Those guys will probably have the time and appreciate the money. Could also reach out to high schools or his high school coach and ask if they would recommend anyone.
The one thing I would do is if you end up doing private coaching is make sure there’s an open line of communication between the private coach and the high school coach. I’d make sure that the position reads and position fundamentals in the private coaching would translate to what he will do on his team. For instance our LBs read guards, but some guys teach reading backs. If a kid for us got private coaching and the coach taught him to read backs it would not be what was best for a kid in our program.
When I was a young, I’d be annoyed by a kid being privately trained but as I’ve gotten older I’d appreciate a kid trying to get extra work. I really think as long if you let his team coach know he’s just looking for extra work and not better work then it could be a good thing for your kid.

My dad was a private hitting instructor and S&C coach for baseball for ~20 years. I'm assuming the reason fb coaches are more finicky about it is the different techniques related to scheme. I do remember one good argument where the HS coach wanted the player to swing down on the ball, my dad taught a level swing. Player kept hitting into groundouts. Next AB he ignores the coach, swings level, bombs a deep HR. It created some controversy as he rounded 3rd, ignored the coach and come to the fence to pet my dog (he was everyone's good luck charm before AB's)

Every Private coach I find on social is straight fire bruh no cap. They got LB's doing back flips into tackles.

I would maybe ask the head coach at his HS about a private coach. I mostly see private Oline, DB, WR and QB coaches, but I'm sure LB coaches exist out there. I know of 2 former NFL linebackers that live in the neighborhood I used to live in the East Valley I just don't know if they coach or not.
