Very simple really...
9 or 10 events (more or less your choice) of your choosing (here is what we use)
1. Bench Press (for reps) 225 lbs. (11-12th grade) 185 lbs. (9th and 10th grade)
we typically have 2 divisions of teams Varsity and JV so a sophomore competing with the varsity team would have to do 225.
This is a TEAM total. 5 guys on a team. So if player 1 does 12 reps, player 2 does 10 reps, player 3 does 7 reps, player 4 does 10 reps, and player 5 does 5 reps the team total is 44 (if I added right)
2. Tire Flip Relay (we use a big old tractor tire)
Run it just like the shuttle hurdle relay...one guy flips it all the way down to the other guy, who flips it all the way back to the 3rd guy and so on. We usually flip the tire for 15-20 yards. This one is time based....
3. 40 yard Shuttle Relay
same as above, only running
4. Pickup truck push
5 guys push the truck 40 yards or so (also a timed event) we usually give them 3 tries, best time counts
5. 7 man sled push
5 guys on the 7 man sled, pushing for 15 seconds...measure the distance it is moved from the middle of the sled.
6. Hay Bale Throw/Tire Throw
Just like throwing the discus...add all distances to deterrmine team total. We set no rules as to how they throw it...measure how ever you want. We usually measure the back of where it lands. This one is a riot!
7. Obstacle Course Relay
Set up a short (remember they are O-Line guys) obstacle course using whatever you have. Time it...penalize for mising cones, knocking stuff over etc. This one is fun to watch as well....
8. Deadlift
same as bench press except they can max out. add all the totals ....
9. Fastest Dozen
We have used Casey's cake dougnuts. Put the box on the table...using a stopwatch time teams to see who can get them down the fastest. Puking is automatic disqulaification....
Score it just like a track meet
1st 10
2nd 8
3rd 6
4th 4
5th 3
6th 2
7th 1
Best total score wins.
We give a trophy for varisty and JV divisions, and meadls for 1st place teams in each.
Included in the hundred bucks is a T-Shirt
We do not try to make money on this, typically break even.
My next thought is to organize this in conjunction with a 7 on 7 tourney and host both at one time. Have to figure out if I can get the help necessary to make it work.
Can do it any way you want...we have tried 2 ways (depending on number of teams and help available) set it up in stations and rotate your teams through. Or just do 1 event at a time, and let non-competeing (sp?) teams watch.
Seriously guys, this is an awesome way to develop some cohesiveness with your O Linemen. They LOVE it. And they are whupped when the day is over....
