We are getting new sleds this year. Which one do you like and why?
We are getting a 7 man for the HS level and a 5 man for our youth program. Also getting a 32' zone chute but now I am just bragging.
Thanks

I was purely a Mod Sled guy. Coached a few places that had Lev sleds, but didn't like them as much. Felt like they led to guys being too high and not blocking as long. Mods are also cheaper.
Either way, congratulations.

I feel like you can use the lev sled for a wider variety of things...you can drive a lev sled but you can't do much other than drive a mod sled.

I like the Gillman sled, low boy pads. Pads are narrow at bottom wider at top. Perfect for double teams. Great for flat back get off the ball blocking. Lev sleds break. I've never been a fan of them. You could get on of those at a 5man and get a Crowther 2 man probably for the price of that 7 man. I always loved the Crowther for good Ole wedge and shoulder blocking.

Gilman varsity 5 man, and a Gilman youth 5 man. More useful for offense and defense. Had 2 Gilman popsicles for tackling, and 1 Gilman 2 man used by the RB's, TE's, and LBers. Didn't matter where I was, at what school, I ordered all my field equipment from Gilman. Because I was such a good customer I was always able to get a price break.

Not an OL or DL coach, but a guy that used sleds for punch/release/tackle in Indy We had a 5 man LEV sled that was used by DBs and by all in a tackle circuit. To me LEV was more realistic in what I was trying to achieve--- low pad level, punch and then release/get off. The mechanics of the LEV sled taught the kids to not 'play the drill'.... I.E. try and lift the pad, they have to strike the pad and that punch lets the sled release. Again, if I strike a WR/TE/etc... and land a blow, then he will be off balance and then I be able to then go in/out/to the ball easily. It really boils down to what the sled is going to help you do. I like the S sled from Crowther b/c they make the contact more realistic in my opinion SLED

I use a Lev sled to teach every aspect of striking and releasing for DL. 6 pt, 3 pt layout, bump combo, arm over release, etc.
Would I rather have a Jenkins sled? Yes. But the Lev has uses.

Its designed specifically for the drills and techniques Pete Jenkins teaches. Bags are all shaped specific ways to encourage hand placement and supination, etc. It's not really a sled in a traditional sense, because it's not designed to be pushed. Its really designed to train striking and whatnot. rogersathletic.com/products/5-x-2-jenkins-eagle-sled/

I'm late to respond, so I'd say what everyone else said is really it...our entire defense uses the Lev sled for punch drills, block destruction and shedding, etc. I also used the Lev sled a decent amount when I coached H-Backs and TE's for blocking technique...obviously you can do this with any sled but I thought the Lev did a good job of teaching proper hand placement and punching, hips, etc.

we had a Rae crowther sled and our customer service was brutal, came with missing pieces for set up, it was ridiculously heavy and it was missing parts of the coating so it was a rust bucket within the first year. We couldn’t get anyone in a three state area to take it so it ended up as scrap metal.

depends on the use
for ol? mod
for dl and defensive stuff, lev
best mix, crowther
I like big heavy bags better really, like harding uses, have to stay low to drive them for ol
