I've been blessed to live/work in California, New England, Minnesota, Ohio, and now Texas. I was in California 30+ years ago. My family still lives there so...what it was back then is certainly NOT what it is now. Autumn in NE is exceptional, and I found the boys I coached in NE to be some of the toughest (physically and mentally) I have coached. MN winters were frigid and LONG, and the boys in Minnesota were a hardy bunch (for good reason!), and played with a ton of heart. OH had four distinct seasons, and the Ohio kids while a little rough around the edges were very coachable. Texas weather changes overnight and can vary greatly throughout the state. I coached in private schools in Texas where those kids gave you ALL they had ALL the time, but Texas football is Friday Night Lights, and FNL is all about the UIL and the public schools. Each of my stops had its pluses and minuses (some more pluses, some more minuses), but overall I'd have to praise the Lord for directing my retirement to Texas.

Maybe I am wrong since I've never been there. But, arent the winters pretty brutal in the area ya'll are talking about? Admittedly, I am more of a warm weather guy myself. It's not too bad. Of course, I live in an area where we can have high temps in the -40s in the winter, so I might not be the best frame of reference.
I coached about 80 miles from there and it was the 2nd coldest place I've lived (and I have lived in white winters pretty much my entire life).
One year there I was driving to the school for practice at a little before 7am. The bank showed a temperature of 19. It was correct... and this was in August (it warmed up to about 70, which was typical there).
It can get pretty cold- especially at nights. But as CoachK said, you get used to it.

We think 40 above is cold. So probably not the place for me. 😂

Lou Holtz once described residents of Minnesota as having blonde hair and blue ears.

I've been to Jackson Hole one time (in the summer, for a clinic).
One thing I noticed on the highways in Wyoming were installed swinging barricades that said "Road Closed Due to Snow."

Lou Holtz once described residents of Minnesota as having blonde hair and blue ears. In Michigan we typically have four seasons: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Orange Cone (fixing the roads). Although Climate Change has altered that somewhat. Last two days have set records for high temperatures (upper 50s) where we live. It's more like April usually is.

(i might be one of those). sometimes winter lasts a couple of weeks, sometimes it lasts all winter. and sometimes it's a couple of winters with a couple of springs (and an occasional summer day), all within one winter season.

Thanks to Yellowstone I think a lot of people are coming around to the beauty of the Bitteroot Valley. I worked that UM camp a few times and didn't want to leave. I grew up watching westerns, my favorites were The Mountain Men and Jeremiah Johnson so admiration of the rockies were embedded in me early. Shoot, that means in a way I'm no different than all these people with train station stickers in the back of their minivans

Have never been to Jackson Hole and Wyoming in general, being an east coast guy. But I have often wondered the same thing in "vacation destinations". Where do the teachers live? We love Hilton Head Island, not a cheap place to live at all. Every time I go, I wonder where I would live if I worked there. I believe here in NC on the Outer Banks those districts offer some housing options. The schools on the Outer Banks are generally smaller, the housing options are few, and expensive. I know a guy that coached near Hilton Head and there was a big time booster that put him up in his beach house... until he lost of course. re OBX, c'mon you don't like driving 2 hours to get to work? We're in Raleigh for a reason, it WAS cheaper to live here for higher pay. Bought at the right time during COVID but before the boom. I'm paying 40% of what I did to rent and I have a pool out back and a gym in my basement.

Been going to the OBX since I was 5 in the late 70s. First still pissed my parents had a chance to buy land there about that time and never did, but I digress... Every now and then I think about applying there for a job or coach when I retire. Then I look at the housing prices. And laugh.

Yeah I know some folks that teach out that way, and James Island stuff like that in SC... but most have old family money and a condo/house etc to live in that's long paid off. Not sure how they find anyone young to teach/coach there unless it's just alumni living w their parents

When Harbaugh was with the 49ers he lived a little bit south in Atherton, which is essentially the Hamptons of the west coast. Like your neighbors are Mark Zuckerberg and Steph Curry. He'll be fine. He lived less than a mile or two from me - they all do... however, there is a HUGEEEEE divide between my city and theirs haha

I lived in Hope Mills (neighbors Fayetteville, NC) in 2010-12 and paid $525 for a 2 bed 2 bath apartment that was almost 1000 square feet. Wife and I were both teachers at the time combining for all of $60k and it was our easiest financial times ever lol. Last year we combined for 130 and are just beyond living paycheck to paycheck. Crazy.

Some areas of NC are VERY affordable compared to the rest of the state and the country in general. Where I live has to be one of the lowest cost of living in the state. However, a lot of poverty, not a lot of jobs, not a lot to do without driving an hour or so.

We snuck in right on time re NC housing. Right house (old, needs work, but not bad) In the right spot (near highway but off the path in an old neighborhood) For the very right price/interest rate
If I wanted to buy right now I'd be F'd

Out of curiosity I was looking at realtor.com yesterday and a 1/8th timeshare of an 1100sq ft condo is ONLY $180k in Jackson.
There is no way this real estate bubble doesn't burst soon.

Paid $154,000 and locked in a 2.8% rate on our 1700 sq. foot home that is now valued at around 100k more than what we bought it for. Snuck in literally a month or two before prices shot up a few years ago.

I remember a girlfriend paying $275K for her 2/2 condo in cement hell territory of Orlando back in 2006. Right now those same condos are worth $250. I have no idea who thought a condo should be worth that much but they got what they asked for

Same size, needed renovations, no pool

I am in rural Indiana currently. We have moved a bunch so we rented the last ten years. We are originally from here so right at the beginning of Covid we bought a 386 square foot lake cottage for like 50K on a 2.75% mortgage.
Last year I took a head coaching job here so when we moved back we stayed in our cottage until we could find something reasonable. We are still waiting. I refuse to pay double what a house is worth knowing that the market reset is possible in the near future and probable at some point soon.
It really hasn't been miserable, but our son is a teenager and dying to get into a real house. Our mortgage is under $300 a month so I am in much less of a hurry.
Housing is rough right now and the cost of everything else makes it way worse. I don't know how people can stretch their budgets to have house payments that take up a significant portion of their income. Being tight on finances stresses me out worse than living in a tiny house.

Debated switching jobs to Wake County for a shorter commute, but realized we would never be able to buy a house in Wake County, so we bought in Harnett County. Easily a $100,000 difference in the same house 25 miles south.

But in between the two where there isnt a whole lot, you pay about half the price.

It's kind of wild since it's just a middle of nowhere area.

When I coached at Menlo I would ride my cheap ass bike I got from Target down Camino Real, right by the Maserati/Ferrari dealership and right up the street to Jerry Rice's house. The average car around there is a Porche 911, like that's the baseline. And that was before the second tech boom.
