For those of you who have a football period of class, do you guys try and do anything fun right before the winter break? Previous years, we would just have guys hang out and pretty much do nothing since I didn't see the point in beating a dead horse and get upset that guys weren't working hard enough in the weightroom before going on a long break. It can be competition, gift exchange, anything like that.

We used to have a Madden tournament but our admin decided that was not a good way to spend the "exam" period in a football weightlifting class. We would put it up on the projector so it was huge in the weight room and fill out a bracket and have a tournament. We would usually bring in some snacks and the top three players would get some sort of prize. T-shirt, hat etc

We just did a pickleball tournament with my football kids in weights class. Gets the kids to compete, but have fun at the same time. They all get excited when it's their turn to play against the coaches.

Not before winter break, but on the day before Spring Break we do Trojanlymplics. We divide our kids into 5 teams. And we would have a series of events, some were team events, some were individual events where you picked one person from each team. Some were kind of silly/fun. For example, we would do med ball relay (team). Then goal post hang (individual). We would finish the day off with some ice cream, and we would tell the kids to wear beach attire, swimming trunks, tank tops, hats, sunglasses, swimmies, etc...

There is no place for fun in the weight room. Squat heavy below parallel 8-6-4-3-2-2-2-4-1 and send them to English class.

On a serious note, dodgeball would be great if you have gym space or your kids could join the "regular" PE class for a day or two if not.

I second this, we played "Dodgeball Poker" where when you got out, to get back into the game, you flipped a card from the deck, each suit was different exercise, for example, Hearts=pushups, Spades=Burpies, Clubs=Situps and Diamonds=Jumping Jacks and the number of the card was the number of reps. I'd keep jokers in the deck and those were 200 jumping jacks. We did it on "special occasions" throughout the year and the kids never worked harder.

Have done gift exchange, or dirty santa. Like the idea of doing something for kids. We would bring them something to snack on while we play christmas music and just enjoyed our time. Before spring break we would do a group challenge were we divide players in teams and they compete in many different random type of challenges. Winners get a shirt or other random gear.

In Minnesota we don't have an athletics period. At least at schools I have coached and taught at. But at lifting we did the ugly Christmas sweater contest. The lifting squad with the most participation got points and they voted for an individual winner. We played upbeat Christmas music like Run DMC's Christmas in Hollis too.

A Merry Liftmas themed workout is something I’ve seen. Dress up in ugly Christmas attire. Can max out or even just do an arm blaster. Play Christmas music (they have trap and metal remixes)

Not in an actual football period, but it was during a middle school P.E. class...
One of my assistants, who is a parapro who was outside with a kid he was charged with keeping an eye on, started having the players play a game he did as a kid. He called it Punt, Pass, Kick.
It starts at the back of the far endzone. You punt the ball wherever, then throw it from that spot, then attempt a FG from that last spot. The kids loved it.
I don't know how it would work with a full class, but it kept 10-15 of our football players from getting in trouble during a very unstructured window of time.

Gave our guys two weeks off after the season was over. We tested our CORE lifts for the two weeks following (our guys would schedule their own days/times). It provided them a benchmark when they started the off-season program in January. We insisted they test (max out) BEFORE break. Giving them the responsibility to schedule themselves reinforced our philosophy of developing accountability which also helped us identify those we needed to work on. At the same time it provided them the time they needed in their own schedules to prepare for final exams.
