What do you do to learn from film? I have access to all of the games from a team that runs a very similar defense to what I run and I want to learn what he is doing. However, I can't call him up since we play them he doesn't readily share his information.
Are you drawing up the plays and what the defense did?
Are you watching the film over and over again?
I am just looking for tips and suggestions that I can use to learn what other teams are doing to improve my knowledge.

I can't break it down in Hudl. I don't have that much access. But the question remains if I was watching games on NFHS or another platform what has worked for coaches to learn from film when you can't talk to the coach? That is the answer I am looking for in this question.

Before HUDL as a GA I had to chart all of the opponents defensive schemes: Most of the same stuff that HUDL now does automatically. That being said the process put us in a position to have a feeling for what was going to be called without looking at the chart. Finding the tells on the field etc..
When looking at 2 defenses that are similar in structure (3-4, 4-2, 3-5 or whatever) you know what calls are available but the film should point out what the coaches mentality is going to be. Factors we added were: 1.What is the offense they are playing trying to do to attack the structure and how does the D adjust to that. 2. Is there a glaring weakness the O has that they are trying to exploit, that changes what they are doing. 3. Is there a wrinkle that they are used in previous games that they haven't used in recent games, certain blitzes, double teams, brackets, stunts that they have not consistently done but have shown.

I’d say look to where they are putting their best players, where are they putting their worst players and how are those situations affecting their play calls.
Probably also try to figure out how are they calling their strength and what auto adjustments go they have.
How often do they pressure, why are they pressuring when they do.
Things like that is where I kind of look.
But really I’m not going to waste time trying to learn from someone or something I can’t get answers from. Find someone else that runs a similar defense and will answer your questions unless you are studying the opponents defense just to kill time and have fun in the off-season.

How are they fitting counter? Power? Zone? You should be able to look and tell that. What coverages are they in? You should be able To tell that. What blitzed/stunts do they use most? Finally, what adjustments do they make when they are getting hurt??

Look at his films and compare what he did to what you did. What worked, what didn't, and making exceptions for personnel, what would you do differently than he did. You can diagram plays, old school style on legal pads, and see how he aligned and reacted to various looks. As mentioned above by silkyice bring out your inner Belichick. If nothing else, it can give you a head start on upcoming opponents for next season.

If you have it in hudl break it down with your terminology and then run reports. I can't break it down in Hudl. I don't have that much access. But the question remains if I was watching games on NFHS or another platform what has worked for coaches to learn from film when you can't talk to the coach? That is the answer I am looking for in this question. Back before they invented color, there were these things called tablets/note pads. And with a ruler and a pencil you could draw on them and make columns and rows, and even include headings. You also could use them to draw little X's and little O's. And once you made a butt ton of sheets of paper, you could spread them out on the floor and then sort them by like numbers/X's&O's/ etc..... Then you stacked the like sheets and then started drawing/sorting again with like categories. After that you tallied the numbers on a chalk board and then contemplated the numbers. Yeah, just being an arse, but..... the working of the sorting and then the working of the numbers made me the coach I am. Hudl is convenient but the analysis/knowledge component can't be exchanged. Do some drawing and sorting and you'll figure it out.

I can tally mark an entire game on a notepad in the same time I get through 15 clips on HUDL waiting for it load, fixing the autocomplete stuff, tabbing through different categories ect.
