As I am preparing for our end of season coaching staff meeting a thought has come to mind (again- not the first time).
Great hires or Dumb Luck
From the previous HC only myself and 1 other coach are hold overs. He and I were in college together and were coordinators under the previous coach. Not one of them filled out an application until after I told them they were hired.
Hired my student teacher.
Hired my practicum teacher.
Hired 2 former players.
Hired a volunteer who had been part of several state championship teams-- we happened to be the first to respond to his inquiry.
Hired a DC from a rival school, also State Championship program after he finished his master's degree and got hired in district.
Hired a volunteer who was highly recommended by the first volunteer, played on the state championships.
Not to mention the strength coach who was a volunteer FB coach and has absolutelychanged the culture of our weight room for the bettrer.
Blessed!

The 3 best hires I ever made were all guys who had never coached football before but they were good dads, hard workers, and cared about the kids.
You can teach them all the football stuff they need to know but you cant make them good people

I hired a guy once because he came to "interview" with me while I was rearranging the weight room. Guy was in dressy clothes and immediately jumped in and started helping. Hired him on the spot. Honestly can't tell you a single thing we talked about. I was ready to hire him when he did that.
Turned out to be a real good WR/DB coach. We disagreed frequently on how much we should throw the ball, but he was a good kid who did a good job for us.
I'll immediately hire anybody who would be willing to do what he did.
Some of the worst assistants I ever had were "football guys" who all were pissed they weren't made HC. Would have loved to have fired them as soon as I took over, but some of the places I've been, they were the only warm bodies I could get that 1st year.

Hindsight is always 20/20 in regards to hiring or not hiring coaches. Kept two guys on staff from the previous regime and hired an old timer at the request of my AD. Fired them all after the first game

Hindsight is always 20/20 in regards to hiring or not hiring coaches. Kept two guys on staff from the previous regime and hired an old timer at the request of my AD. Fired them all after the first game Jesus, please elaborate! Just a couple of guys who never really bought into the change that was being implemented.
One was a defacto STC who didn't know anything about Special Teams and thought that squib kicking was the best bet. Was a total negative presence who was always finding ways to complain about the kids, scheme and whatever else he could get in his brain.
Second guy was the former HCs best friend and DC, just needed to be done for the sake of our kids, not a bad guy as he does a good job with the youth program. Last guy was the new body who constantly questioned everything I did, would stare at me smugly when I told him what I wanted to be done and was telling our kids not to squat during the season so they could save their knees.
All three needed to be done, the first two should have been done when I got hired instead of bringing them along. The last one was me trying to do a solid for our AD but she agreed it needed to be done.

I know it's difficult to fire the entire staff, but if one was to take over a losing program, what questions/ ways do you ask/do to see if hold overs are going to buy in? Willing to change? Willing to learn?
