We are a 1A team in AL. We dress 44 varsity players grades 8-12. Most starters play both ways, but the majority of our 10-12 graders can and do contribute. We are 6-3, and 6-1 in region play finishing 2nd in our region. We have one non region game left and start the playoffs next week at home. This kid didn't play but a few plays in the first two games. We had a starting RB and a back up RB. We had our starters set on Defense. In Game 3 at RB, and he went for a 40 yd TD on a buck sweep. Since then he's amassed. 791 rushing yards on 86 carries and 10 TDs while splitting time with the original starter. He also has a Rec. TD, and KOR TD and a total of 1161 all purpose yards over 7 games he's played in. Defensively he has 10 tackles (1 TFL) and an INT. He has played RB, slot, and QB on offense, and NG and CB on Defense. He's 6-2 190. Oh, he's a great kid, makes his grades and is very coachable. Here's a highlight video from Max Prep. www.maxpreps.com/al/maplesville/maplesville-red-devils/athletes/nehemiah-mccary/media/videos/?careerid=v6per5otdhgp9&videoid=d820f3fe-ff40-4d35-a1c0-835967da5bff

Love those surprises. We had a junior come out this year that only played baseball his freshman and sophomore year. Big kid, can only hit a fastball. He's splitting time at 3 tech and killing it. Plays midline like nobodys business.

Plays midline like nobodys business. Years ago when I first started we got a baseball kid (catcher) that was pretty good on the diamond to come out a play WR (yes that is correct) for us his Jr & Sr year. Sr year made All region and All State. Ended up getting a full ride to an instate DI-AA and started for 3 years there. I've always used that story to recruit the building. 85/63 scholarships is a whole lot more than 11 divided by ever how many for baseball, or 13 for basketball, etc....

I try to do the same thing, but they just don't see it. I love baseball, it is truly my favorite sport (just not to coach), but so many of them seem to think playing football in the fall is going to kill their recruiting. No, you throwing 74 as a junior and playing on the JV is hurting your recruiting. The 3 best baseball players in the history of our program, all Major Leaguers, also played football. One of them was 4-star QB, the other was a pretty sought after QB, and the other played football his freshman year until the Perfect Game baseball rankings came out and he was 1st in the class nationally...everyone understood him quitting after that.
