We are headed to round 1 of the play-offs: They are the 3 seed but should have been the 2 seed not that it matters.
We are the 6 seed. We played early in the season and lost 28-12 (our kicker was at a soccer game).
Kick-off time is 7:00pm and temp. are expected to be in the high teens low 20's.
We lead the conference in passing and are second in the state. We will find out how tough we are tonight!
Carharts and beanies!!!

One of the things I liked about coaching football (as opposed to basketball and baseball) was being outside, practicing-playing in different seasons. Instead of being stuck in a stuffy old gym or getting "rained out." To my mind part of the charm of the sport. But then I was born in Green Bay and coached in Michigan.

BLB, I have a question:
Being up north, I know your players were more well adjusted than here in the south, but what tricks or advice do you have for skill players in the cold?
I know one thing I used to do was wear latex gloves under my WR gloves to keep the wind out at least. Another trick I used was keeping my internal(area under my pads) as warm as possible to hopefully keep the extremities with warmer(No clue if that's scientifically accurate).

We did the latex gloves and the foot warmers between 2 pairs of socks. Nipco heaters on the sideline and every skill kid has a hand muff. Only had 3 kids go without sleeves. We also had them change socks and warmers at half. Layers for the guys not getting a lot of playing time. I think getting acclimated is under rated, don't be soft at practices, get out in the cold and get used to it. Only 2 dropped passes, but we were running for our life. We counted 13 different blitz combinations. 16 rushes for 74yds by our TB/FB, 7 rushes for -44 by QB. Biggest issue with the exception of 2 drives we had 2 and 10 plus or 3rd and 10 plus due to negative 1st down plays. 2INT's and a safety in the second half sealed the deal.

We bought belted hand-warmers with the packs that went inside for the skill kids, and sideline jackets. No real "tricks." Kids dressed as they wanted, long-sleeved Tee or thermal shirt under pads and long johns or "tights" were common. Some wore gloves, never paid attention to if any used latex. As that old naval Commander W. W. Hayes said, "If you're going to fight in the North Atlantic, you have to train in the North Atlantic." So acclimation by practicing in the cold was probably most important thing.

A week ago Thursday when we played it was 60 degrees and almost no wind. Friday by the end of the game 12 and wind chill to 8. Wish we had more than one real practice in the cold but it was a struggle to get the field cleared the way it was.

By the time they got to Varsity kids probably practiced-played in cold and other bad weather more than once.
Honestly never talked about it much other than I told them it was "part of the charm of the sport" and a case of "Mind over Matter" - if I didn't mind, it didn't matter.

All are logical approaches. I'm always looking for some kind of mental or physical edge. Thanks for the advice/knowledge!

Several years ago during the playoffs, when we had pulled up some JV kids that we wanted to reward, the weather starts to get cool; we have a game that will (for us) be cold -- in the low 40s/upper 30's at KO.
So all the ROYs/hotdog eaters are bundled up, including one of my 10th grade/JV safeties (that end up starting for me his senior year on a state championship team) has everything on he can find.
We go through our normal dynamic warm up, positional warm up, etc..... well one of the other players comes up to me and says, "There's something wrong with Jimmy" and there is this kid is sitting over on the bench. I go over and check on him and he is obviously hurting but says that he will be okay. I tell him to talk to the trainer, and go on getting ready for the game.
Comes to find out he had to be rushed to the hospital that night to have emergency surgery because he spermatic cords had gotten twisted up as he was warming up with all the pairs of long underwear he had on under his game pants.

Up here in Canada we tape up the ear holes. Especially if the wind is whipping.

That's a new one... I'd say smart decision.
