My son, who is a soph, played a JV game Thursday night, so he didn't dress for last night's Varsity game. I watched it on YouTube. The guy behind the safety threw the furthest flag throw I've ever seen. I have no idea how far it went because it entered the top of the screen and flew another 15-20 yards. He called a block in the back on my son's team that was actually the defender running straight into the back of a WR. It could have been a real game changing call and he was at least 25yds out of position. I would have probably gotten kicked out. Edit- I linked the video and the play is at 3:03:22. www.youtube.com/live/715EjaJx9co?feature=shared

Guy tried to throw our HC out Friday night from around 25yds away. Him and the white hat were having words but it wasn’t anything crazy. Guy slung that bish and gave the you’re out of here signal. Even the white hat was like WTF are you doing

Probably about 30, but it was on a line no more than 6 feet above the ground.

Years ago as a young newbie coach, at the end of a play on our sideline a flag landed right in front of me so I threw the flag (about 20 yds) to the official who threw it. He wasn't very happy with me, I apologized, my HC told him I was just a dumbass rookie, and luckily we didn't get another one thrown.

The bad part is, my son's team is vastly improved over last year. I can't stand watching their offense. It's SO bad.

Anyone ever seen one travel farther in a game? playing a game against a local dfw team, on their 100 anniversary of playing football homecoming game we run OSV give from about 50 yards in, and the ref at the goalline threw a holding call from the goalline to the 50 to screw us home cookin there

I wouldn't say last nights back judge had the farthest throw... but if you added them together they would amount to the most distance by one official I have ever seen. We had 14 penalties to their 1.
Almost all were called by the back judge including: a (anticipated) block in the back as the ball was being snapped (good 25 yard throw), an illegal contact on out LB on a pass (that wouldn't have been a foul in basketball- another 20-25 yds.), and a P.I. call from across the field (another 20-25 yd. throw) on a DB who made no contact whatsoever but was "faceguarding".
The only thing I yelled to the officials all game was on the P.I. All I said was "Hey. In 7-5-10 they removed section B, so unless he made contact, that is NOT a penalty". He looked at me dumbfounded... so did the side judge.
I don't like to gripe about officials... (hard job, shortage, etc.), but it is much worse now than any time I can remember. We've had to tell officials they "can't have 5 in the backfield" and "the covered TE can't run a seam" (which resulted in a 32 yard gain on 3rd & 15). All this happened in a region game we lost 31-24 a few weeks ago... officiating was awful... and I would blame them for the loss if we hadn't played so poorly- which we did.
Still, it is hard to cover 6 "eligible" receivers... perhaps the fact that we do have 6-man football and are on the Canadian border means the confusion is too great and we won't get this corrected any time soon...

I don't even coach anymore and I feel your pain. Last night's crew at my son's game was about the best crew I've seen in a while. Didn't really notice they were there. That's an outstanding crew these days.

At my son's JV game Monday the opposing team got called for holding on a long play and the white hat asked the back judge if they scored on the play (which, Idk why that matters). The guy (who's been a ref for a really long time) had no idea. None. Couldn't answer the question.
So, I watched him when my son was on the sideline. He spent most of the plays watching the fans on the sidelines. Just there to earn a check.

At last night's game, my son's team was on defense and the DE hits the QB, wraps him up and spins him around and takes him to the ground. As he is spinning, the QB chucks the ball laterally with the closest WR being 20 yards away. They were on the right hash and the closest receiver was the back in the backfield blocking. Everyone else ran fades. Out comes the flag.
For roughing the passer. Ref said the DE should have seen the Qb's arm releasing the ball and not taken him to the ground after he released it. Tell me you've never tackled someone without telling me.
2 plays later they throw it deep, over the WR and DB. The DB has a legitimate chance to intercept the pass. He was not only tackled by the WR, he was horse collared in doing so. No flag. None.
I know there's a ref shortage, but come on...

I certainly can't be worse than the idiots they have out there. The state of reffing in Illinois, I might be working a state championship in 2 years.

The side judge was about 5 yards away. Ball incomplete, whistle blows, everybody slows down/stops; a full 3 seconds later the back judge crow hops and throws a flag towards that sideline about 25 yards in the air. He then jogs over and picks up the flag to toss it the additional 10 yards to mark the spot of the 'foul'. yeah, I'm a DB coach but it was not even close to a PI.

I rarely yell at refs because I know they try and it's a job no one wants. 3 things piss me off though 1. When refs don't know basic rules 2. They allow the sidelines to determine what flag does and doesn't get thrown 3. Poor mechanics- when a ref throws a flag on something that's not their call, I lose my {censored} mind I lied- 4. When refs take it upon themselves to keep the score close and start throwing complete BS.

We had one thrown last Friday by the sideline official that was a white hats call and it was blatantly obvious but the white hat wasn’t going to do it. #5 refs that practically break their necks to “not see” a penalty

HOmie last week did the ol underhand wrist flit and it went 10 yards behind him. Turned out to be off setting personal foul as our RT pancaked a dude on the refs feet.

I will say that for whatever reason, I saw way more of 2 and 3 this year than I ever have before.

Had a ref throw a flag from our 40 that landed on the opposite 30. Thats right a 30 yard flag throw. Anyone ever seen one travel farther in a game? My son, who is a soph, played a JV game Thursday night, so he didn't dress for last night's Varsity game. I watched it on YouTube. The guy behind the safety threw the furthest flag throw I've ever seen. I have no idea how far it went because it entered the top of the screen and flew another 15-20 yards. He called a block in the back on my son's team that was actually the defender running straight into the back of a WR. It could have been a real game changing call and he was at least 25yds out of position. I would have probably gotten kicked out. Edit- I linked the video and the play is at 3:03:22. www.youtube.com/live/715EjaJx9co?feature=sharedStanding at the 35 and gets it to the opposite 45 so a 20 yard flag throw. BS call though but I've seen much worse. Sometimes a WR who puts his hands up just looks guilty of holding/block in the back.

I apologize up-front ... This one is not about how far away but how close the official was when he THREW the flag. It's been a few decades but: An official in the middle of the field threw a flag against our players for something that "seemed" unfair to us on the sidelines (let's say a bad call!). The official on our sidelines threw a flag on our coaching staff for unsportsmanlike behavior (yes we were vocal about Call 1). One coach (not me) was avidly profane in expressing his displeasure and it drew a 2nd flag from the sideline official. That flag had a golf ball sewn into one corner and at 3-5 feet of distance, he turned and THREW it - nailing me in the chest. At that point I expressed myself in a somewhat profane manner and he pulled his 3rd flag from somewhere and threw it at my feet. I would like to say he pulled his 3rd flag out of his @$$ ! I had no idea any official carried 3 flags - so, we got 45 yards stepped off due to coaches and I would guess a 10- or 15-yarder for the initial call. Bad thing is, we learned the next week that the sideline official was a UPS driver that delivered to our school - and our principal (who had gone to our high school and played in the band) who was also AD, called us all in and gave us an ear-full.

not how far a flag was thrown, but - had a mike (who ended up being all-state) hit a guy so hard at around the 50, the ball flew out, our guys chased it and recovered it in the end zone. (longest fumble i've ever seen, not to mention one of the hardest hits i've seen). the ref that chased it and was down there called it a td. kid verified it was in the end zone when he recovered it. white hat, at the 40, overruled it and said it was recovered at the 1 yard line. district rival, close game, we were supposed to lose but won. we scored anyway, but i mean, come on. that could have ended up costing us the game. different school, different game, had about a 30 yard throw right at us, on the opening kickoff, 15 yard unsportsmanlike. apparently we had yelled. then we got into an argument trying to find out what we did, almost got another one. i started watching the guy that threw it; on every play, he watched our sideline until a second or two before the whistle blew at the end of the play. come to find out (new school, new coaching staff), the guys before us had a reputation for raising hell on the sideline.
