ncaasavant.com/apps/map.php?div=&conf=This link goes to a pretty cool interactive map that shows just how different the college football participation is across the country. You can filter by level and by league. Something to keep in mind when we are having discussions.

Geez, for all the talent and massive population base in southern California, only 13 CFB participating schools. No wonder all our kids leave to go out of state.

Comporting with my observations about football interest generally, the area centered on Ohio is especially dense. However, the narrow band in western Penna. going into W. Va. makes more of a contribution to that cluster than I'd even thought.

Needs to be updated a bit. I hopped on just to look at the old D3 conference I played in and it’s missing a few schools and still has one that has since bumped to D2. Probably primarily up to date though

Probably primarily up to date though It may be pretty old. I just came across it, and thought that it was pretty interesting, particularly when you see huge swaths of the US without certain divisions represented. Also it is interesting to see how many football schools are in each state and compare it to the states population.

I guess a ton of lower FCS fringe style teams have gone away, St Mary's, Pacific, and Cal State Fullerton, all used to have teams (not even all that long ago, St Mary's had a team in 2003, Pacific 1995, Fullerton 1992). I'm sure there are several more I'm just not familiar with.

How there aren't more schools in California as a whole? As big and dense of a population as there is in SoCal and as big of a state as it is on sheer geographic space alone, you would think there would be more.

Just schools with NCAA football programs. NAIA schools or schools without football are not included.

Schools without football don't exist in my book, I guess that's why I didn't specify! What did Vince Lombardi say? Something like, "Schools without football are in danger of becoming Medieval Study Halls."

That list still includes Asuza, Humboldt, and Simon Fraser, all of which shut down their programs for different reasons.
Lower-level football will come back to CA, one day. Right now the JUCOs are too cheap and convenient. But as soon as someone like CSU-East Bay wants to start a program they'll be a powerhouse overnight. They'll have to turn kids away in droves.
