Haha. No, I meant how would you make sure your child played nothing other than tag until he (or she) was in middle school? Goodness Bob--this conversation topic as a whole and vicvinegar 's reply in specific is absolutely 100% positively about organized tackle football with equipment.

Then let's change vlcvinegar's statement from "not play anything other than tag" to "not play organized tackle football with equipment", which looks a lot less like helicopter parenting! Unless he really meant it.

Must have been an auto correct. 2) When it comes to ORGANIZED football, my child will not play ORGANIZED tackle football until at least Middle School. No, I will not follow my child around to make sure my child isn't playing tackle football in the backyard with their friends. That will be allowed. I hope that's clear enough for you. Let me know if you need any further clarification.

Been there done that: I have been involved in our community football program for the past 16 seasons.
We switched from flag to tackle 8 years ago. Why? The level with the most injuries was Flag. The next most was 9th grade. After making the move from OC to HC, we changed the way we tackle and how we practice it for 9th grade. After moving from Flag to tackle in 3rd grade injuries went way down.
8 years later and having a son that has played all the way through...He loved football in grades 3-6! 7th grade he landed awkwardly and broke his wrist. Played in 4 games 8th grade he was on the B team and shared time, great group of kids but he saw he would not get to play much if he stayed at his O position. 9th grade played FB and LB and had a blast until mid-season, not sure what happened but he just about quit and said he would never play football again. 10th grade- he came out reluctantly and had a very good season (probably one of the toughest lead in's to a season I have ever had) 11th grade- He plays baseball and their season ended poorly this weekend and FB camps are next week. He has been a 4 sport athlete over the last year (Football, Basketball, Track/HS baseball and summer baseball). He needs a vacation!
I absolutely Love the kid and he is a joy to watch compete, great team mate, works hard, coachable and above average talent but probably not All-state type kid in any sport.

I don't have a child, but I'll answer hypothetically. I’m coaching middle school right now. I’m in the process of starting my own family and was thinking of the following questions 1. When would you let your son play football? As soon, and as long, as s/he: - showed interest in the game by playing informally (padless, peer-organized);
- begged and bargained with us to play adult-organized ball; and
- kept hir part of the bargain.
We could skip condition A if s/he was already playing another team sport and wanted to switch to or add football. Depends. Are they mostly bad, or just a few bad apples? If they were just a few, were bad in some obvious way, and I saw administration not trying to help the situation in some way, I'd assume those coaches were "connected" somehow, and see if we could get lucky by not winding up on one of those teams. And if we were unlucky, quit! Here I'm understanding "bad" to mean dangerous or abusive. Just bad at coaching, or at football -- I don't care. If the organization was rife with them, go elsewhere. If for some reason my kid protested that hir friends were playing for the bad coaches, or that s/he unaccountably loved the dangerous or abusive coach, I'd have to explain that such people are no good for them.

I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t want my son playing football. If he wants to I’m going to coach the bell out of him. But I’m not going to encourage or push it on him. If you do it right it’s physical as hell and its not worth the head injuries later on in life. I guess that makes me a hypocrite but it is what it is. I think you can do your best to keep your head out of it and avoid injuries. I do worry about soft-tissue injuries like shoulders, knees, back and ankles. But, I contend there is no sense in taking tread off the tires before the age of 10 or 11.

Also, no headers in youth soccer...might blow their Fulbright Scholly.
