Question. Was having this conversation with a colleague. I was screwing around and typed in "create a football practice plan" in Chat GPT and while it was very generic, it was pretty solid. It even allowed you to go into detail if you wanted it to.
It got my colleague thinking and he asked what would happen if your booth guy used Chat GPT during the game and asked questions such as "their hurting us with power. What's a good adjustment to make out of the 4-3 defense." Do you see AI finding its way in the game of football? As crazy as it sounds, 20 years ago, we wouldn't have thought that we'd share film online or be able to rewatch plays on the sideline during a game.

If nothing else, I could see it (or something like it) at the P5 and pro level being very useful, where during the week, you put in all your calls you like for a specific combination of field zone (i.e. low RZ, high RZ, fringe, open field, goalline, etc), opponent personnel, hash mark, D-D, score, and time left based on your scouting of the opponent, then during the game, you have a shorthand notation for all of those combinations, you punch em in, and it spits out on your tablet your list of calls you prepared based on scouting, then you press the call you are choosing, and it logs your choice...This would allow you to get very specific with your calls without having an enormous Denny's menu playsheet... You could even have it take it a step further where it spits out the list of calls, but then from that list, it recommends one of them based on your last call in the current game for that situation, and does so using a randomization feature, i.e. sometimes it will recommend the same call as the last call you made in that same combination, other times it won't be used for several plays (true randomness is streaky www.advancedfootballanalytics.com/2008/09/predictability.html?m=1), as it's important at the P5 and pro levels to keep your opponent guessing (not as much in HS), you would of course have the option to override this based on gut or other pertinent information

Where it occurs to me to use it is in generating college recruiting letters.
It's been a long while since I was in that world, I don't remember any coaches I knew that enjoyed coming up with those letters though.
I think someone that knew what they were doing could generate endless highly personalized letters using Chat GPT.
It's a different level of form letter.

I get the usefulness of it as a tool, but I really enjoy being a human.
As fas using it to find answers during the game, I am skeptical about the actual effectiveness. It feels like buying a system as a quick fix instead of learning how to actually coach kids to execute it. Seems like the best time to ask would be in game planning and then have time to implement the answers, but still I like the personal nature of coaching. I like digging for answers to solve the puzzle and I like the challenge of getting kids to be able to execute those answers.
As far as using it as a communication tool, I also see the effectiveness but it’s so generic it certainly can’t match tone or voice of an individual. Kids are using it to cheat and class and it has made it harder to prove but not catch. Used to theyd copy from some website so you could Google a full sentence of an essay and the site would pop right up that they copied from. Can’t do that with ChatGPT. But once you read the essay it’s flawless in punctuation and uses a noticeable different verbiage than the individuals.
I don’t mind it in either scenario as a means to start gathering information but to find full and final answers I don’t think it can do that…yet.
Back to football. If a team is killing you with power, I would hope as a coach you were expecting to see it and already had your adjustments ready and repped.

As an AI coaching model, I’ve been trained on a vast collection of strategies and techniques in regards to American football. As it pertains to stopping the offensive football play called power, here are some helpful suggestions…….
Language responsive AI is still a long way from environmentally responsive AI. For the former, football would be way down the list of jobs to be replaced. Add the mechanical side for the strategy to be implemented (robots), and you are looking at upending manufacturing, construction, etc.
That will be the tipping point of whether we all live a utopian life of leisure, or Sarah Connor the F out.
Something that can sense the environment real time, and respond with the most likely strategy for success would be mind boggling.
Even then, how does AI rely the corrections, because it the mechanical side is still flesh and blood in this case? How does it inspire a human to be better?
That’s one of the things that makes us different from AI Chat GPT…..they have no real emotions or more importantly, the convictions that drive those emotions.

My understanding is that at this point, GPT is basically an evolved version of the autocorrect on your iphone, it's just filling in the blanks with what its model says should go there.

ChatGPT could be an excellent tool for football coaching! During games, coaches could use ChatGPT to analyze real-time data and provide insights on a team's performance. This could include data on player positioning, pass success rates, and defensive patterns.
In the offseason, coaches could use ChatGPT to develop personalized training plans for individual players. By inputting data on player strengths and weaknesses, ChatGPT could generate workouts and drills that target specific areas for improvement.
Additionally, ChatGPT could be used to simulate game scenarios and help players work on decision-making skills. Coaches could input different variables and have ChatGPT generate various scenarios, allowing players to practice making quick decisions under pressure.
Overall, ChatGPT's ability to analyze data and generate personalized insights could be an invaluable tool for football coaches, both during games and in the offseason
That is what Chatgpt says anyway.

Especially because of your last two paragraphs, I don't see AI ever completely replacing humans. But, I could see it eventually being a powerful tool to aid coaches, especially at the P5 and pro levels, not only in-game, but also in scouting and gameplanning. It would be able to scour the data and film, and identify all relevant trends, tells, etc nearly instantly (assuming a powerful enough computer), as opposed to working 18 hour days just to finish barely above break even and go 9-8 and miss the playoffs....lol

Yes- but do you think college letters carry any weight in 2023? Probably not in the dead tree form, Probably more in the form of Twitter DMs or something. I suspect a good offseason project for a GA, or student assistant would be to try and figure out exactly how much of this could be automated into ChatGPT (or probably more realistically so other specialized derivative AI app [there are a lot of them]). And taken off of position coaches plate. Ie. Feed the last 3 DM the prospect sent you, feed it some biographic data on the prospect into the AI app. App generates 5 possible DM letters, coach can review and send any or all of them that strike his fancy. Or edit them into something else.

Absolutely, the integration of AI into football strategy is an intriguing possibility. Just as you experienced with Chat GPT, its ability to generate detailed plans and responses could be immensely valuable in analyzing game situations and devising strategic adjustments on the fly. Imagine a coach using AI during a game to quickly brainstorm solutions to specific challenges like countering a dominant power play from the opposing team. It's a testament to the evolving landscape of technology in sports. Speaking from personal experience, I've found write my paper for me to be incredibly useful in managing my academic workload. Their essay writing service has not only helped me meet tight deadlines but has also delivered top-notch quality every time. If you're looking for a reliable academic writing solution, I highly recommend giving them a try. After all, just like AI in football, having the right tools at your disposal can make all the difference in achieving success.

"Chat GPT and coaching"is this what they call what Deion Sanders is doing in Colorado? Where do we see AI technology for the sport? There are two factors in answering that question. 1. Our understanding what AI actually IS and where it is presently at. I believe the majority of us think "AI" is just formula-driven 'answers' derived from an algorithm, providing an educated guess. Feed the computer enough answers and it will probably give you the right answer. That may have been true 25 years ago, it is not where AI is today. AI has gone beyond this predictive programming, beyond reactive, beyond responsive and into " Minority Report" oracle territory. It knows things that our human brain cannot conceive. Medical AI ten years ago was able to predict the day and time you're having a stroke next week. It developed a way to figure who and what you are just from your x-rays, something no physician can do. 2. The last part is us, our brain, fathoming WHAT it is capable of today and what that means in the future. If the technology exists today to outsmart and out-execute human behavior, what should that mean for the sport? Probably nothing....because it all comes down to motivating flesh & blood to perform, not North Dallas Forty cogs in a machine. Play-calling (which is really just out-smarting the opponent's call) is only a fraction of what makes a play successful. The real question is can AI " coach"? Can it instruct a human? probably. Can it motivate a human? I imagine it could. Can it develop an athlete? i bet so. Now you're getting into Blade Runner territory, I suppose, but I would think the cost would be too great to dump those kind of resources into "just a sport". Of course, if you tossed around millions like the top NCAA programs or NFL does, why wouldn't you sink a one-time fee for a 'coach' that can last decades and not want a pay raise or fight the front office?

Until Chat GPT can: paint a field, sit in a parent meeting, wash laundry, feign small talk with admin, milk cash from boosters, unZepruder some chitty film, and stop Timmy from skipping practice for a haircut- it's not doing chit for football coaches that actually matters.

I have used Chat GPT to create a play calling simulation game.
Have it react to your play calls and give down and distance, ball location, etc. Its pretty nerdy, but there aren't too many other places where you can get randomized results on your play calls.
It takes a while to set up the correct template. You can ask it to blitz you a certain % based on a specific D&D. Have randomized penalties, dropped balls etc. You can suggest certain position groups are better or worse than your group. Basically make it as detailed as you want it to be. You can teach it your play calls as well.
