We have been put in a unique situation & we are struggling to develop a theme that effectively expresses our greatest need as a program.
Long story short.....we are a small high school that has recently paired our program with a traditional rival. Our rival is a smaller school that was paired with a neighboring school for the previous eight years & was blindsided by the other school's request to end the pairing agreement. We had been football rivals but recently it's been in all other sports.
We would like to develop a theme that expresses unity. Has anyone developed a theme for the season that may apply for our situation? Thanks!

What will you do with this theme? Is it supposed to reach someone...be published...put on "T" shirts?

I've been part of this concept from time to time in my 30+ years. it works best (and I hate the term) when it is is 'organic'. You can't force it, it has to make sense to the kids, and the leaders have to buy in completely. Years ago, it just happened... not planned. We had a really good team, small school, close community, good staff.... all the cards lined up for us to go deep in the playoffs. One of the cheerleaders got into a horrific car wreck right before the fall camp and was in a comma for almost 2 months. That just kind of become our theme: let's get Sally to the the championship. The local news played it up when she finally came to, and the kids (really the ones who lead ti) ran with it. I've also been at places that we as a staff planned the season theme. It worked, but it had to be more than a tshirt, or a banner.... there had to be some real tangible thing the kids could attach to it. And also the coaches had to all really buy in. It had to be the focus of whatever was communicated each and every day. So obviously not knowing all the particulars of your situation, sounds like something like "Together We're All Better" type theme is what you're looking for.

I agree with you 100% as far as it being organic & owned by the players. I am meeting with the collective group of seniors in a little over a week to discuss items like this. More or less to plant a seed for them to generate a theme that they'll own, promote, & defend.

An example of one was right in the middle of a great run was that we had a map of the state of SC cut up into a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece was our regular season games and the playoffs with the final/big piece at the capitol for the state title game.
Each week, that was put up on the meeting board for team meetings during the week, and on the locker room door as the kids left for each game.
The post game meeting was culminated by the HC placing that week's piece on the puzzle.
Another was a team that had lost a lot from the previous year and 'needed to be rebuilt', so we had our season motto lettered onto pieces of 4x4 blocks in the shape of a pyramid, and each week we built our pyramid all the way up to the finals.
