Local tourney had 50 teams with a 4 game guarantee this past week. $1000 entry fee. Is this a Chicago area thing or is this normal now everywhere? If you want to know where AAU anything will take the game, just look at the state of basketball at all levels. Football was the last holdout against the club and AAU stuff where the high school program and the high school coach held sway. That is fast disappearing. These outside groups allow people who are NOT trained educators and who don't have a background in teaching, who by and large aren't concerned with anything long term in the players' lives, aren't interested in instilling discipline, and are by and large only involved either because they have a son or for their own ego in seeing how many games they can win by whatever means necessary. Football was able to hold out because of the expense involved---clubs and AAU can't afford the equipment and the liability. 7 on 7 and combines eliminate that cost and gives them an in. That in has led to those people getting in parents' and kids' ears and plays a big role in all the transfers we are now seeing in high school. I warned basketball coaches 30 years ago what was going to happen when they saw AAU, etc as a way of getting "extra coaching" in the offseason that it would lead to the loss of control of their programs and their players. Time has proven me right. There was a league in Southern California that was created during the pandemic so kids can play football. It was good for the top kids who want to play in college and happen to have their own helmets and shoulder pads, but overall it was a flop.

$1000 a player or $1000 a team?
some places ask for $350 per team other places want $50 a kid.
