maybe you got the job because of a buddy/former teammate was the AD?
were you a big name OC/DC that got a job because your program was successful?
howd you get your first head coaching job?

I got mine be default. I contacted the guy who has the Semi Pro team here in town about coaching and after several practices of just me showing up as the only coach he made me head coach of the team. I have since recruited 2 more coaches and several players.

took over a worthless program in a different state. i had been a college player/hs player (not a big name). assistant at a school while i student taught. applied for a head coaching job at a school with a record of 0-32 in 4 years prior to my arrival, 2-46 in the previous 6 years. we qualified for the playoffs in my 1st year, 2nd year, and 4th year there. kids had never been taught what fb was about. not sure, but i may have been the only applicant for the job, and i had a buddy in the district who helped me to get an interview.

OK High School Player. Bad College Player at a small college. LOL! Quit school and got a job with flexible hours. A coach at a bad school asked me if I could help out because of my college experience, and shortage of football coaches in the area. Served three years as an unpaid volunteer assistant. Served another four years as a paid assistant in charge of offense. Returned to college in 2000 and graduated in 2002. Went back to that bad school and became the HC for three years. Got tired of the whole situation and found a better teaching job with an assistant job in a school with a very good program. Learned the lesson that it is less stressful to be an assistant in a solid program, rather then the head coach in a program with a high turnover rate.

I was DC at a school in the same league with an 8-1 record against the school that hired me.

I was the assistant head coach for 4 years, the HC resigned and I applied for the position and was hired.
In my earlier days, I played HS, JUCO, and DII ball.

Pretty good hs player, small rural town. Went to college in Cali and quikly found out and realized that it wasn't my small rural town anymore, and a lot of other players were pretty dang good. Concentrated on my studies, and the current HC was in his 1st year as an assistant my senior year. Anywho, he asked me if I wanted to coach at my alma matter, and I couldn't refuse.

I got my first HC job by splitting my pants during the interview. They just felt so sorry for me that they HAD to give it to me. However turned out to be a good choice on their part as we went 7-0 and out scored our opponents 159-49 with 30 of those points coming in one game. (rinky dink offense confused my guys for the first half.) Got my second HC job after having been a varsity assistant, then was hired by the Vars HC to be the DC for the JV. He primarily wanted me to keep an eye on the guy and "help him along." Guy proved so incompetent they fired him halfway through the season and promoted me.
