Team A (9-0; Dist. Champs; Playoff bound) leads at half 38-6 and pulls their starters early in the second half. Team B (2-7; No playoffs; final game) Leaves their starters and Srs who don't start, in. The score ends up 52-32 mostly because team B scores on team A's 2nd and 3rd team players. Following the game, Team A's coach is pissed that Team B didn't play their jv guys too (although Team A reinserted their starters twice, scoring on a pass and a reverse). Does Team A have a legitimate complaint? Should a team that is playing it's last game bench its seniors because the other team puts in its subs? Do you throw up your skirt and pull the guys that have committed their last 3 years to your program? Team B's staff has always considered Team A's staff as friends and both respects and admires them. I guess that's why it bothers me. Signed Head Coach of Team B

Team A needs to coach Team A and base all thier decision making on Team A. Team B needs to do likewise.

He has no reason to complain. Sounds like the other team left their Seniors in because it was probably their last game.
I go by the 2-up/3-down rule in the second half for pulling starters, but I don't complain when other people leave them in.
I worry about my team. If the other coach isn't worried about getting his younger players experience why should I be?

The other guy was being unreasonable. Your starters were clearly outmatched by their starters so it would probably stand to reason that your second string would be outmatched by their second string. It sounds like your starters were at least somewhat competitive with their second string. The other coach should be appreciative that his backups got quality reps.

So.. team A thinks you should have pretty much quit and accept defeat after one half?
sorry. with 2 quarters to play, i would still be playing/coaching to win, whatever the score.

I am a product of my raising, I guess. My hs coach wouldn't subin times when we were getting blown out because he didn't want a player secretly hoping the other team would score again just so he could go in. We only subbed in if it was a blowout in our favor. Guess I never considered not trying to win.

If a team has players like that then that's probably a reason that they're bad.

we have had situations where we were blowing out a team, we subbed guys in, they didnt, they started to score quickly and come back...annoying to have to put the starters back in but in the end we realize that we can only coach our own team.

I was head frosh-soph coach a few years ago and we were winning 30-0 with about 6 minutes left in the game. I thought that the game was over and felt it was safe to start subbing in. Well, anyway, the other team (still had their starters in) rips off a 50 yard TD run against our subs and then recovers the onside kick. They score really quick again. So, I scramble to get all of the starters back in, we get the kickoff, but go 3 and out. We punt and they score again quick.
So, with 6 minutes left to go in the game, the score was 30-0. A minute and a half later, the score was 30-22 and we were reeling. Fortunately, we ran the next kickoff back for about 60 yards and then got a couple of first downs to run out the game, but that was almost a really hard lesson learned about subbing guys in when the other team hasn't given up yet.

Saw this same thing last year, and the trouble with team A is now, They have nobody with any playing experience and went from being 8-2 with a 30 or 40 point margin of victory to 1-7.
I would just add, coach this year to win, but also with the intent of winning the next year.
