head coaches...quick survey...
1) how late do your assistants stay during the season (weekdays)
2) how much time do they put in on sat/sundays?
3) how much time during say nov-jan, then from jan-april and again from april-july?
4) how many on your staff meet your expectations/demands?
I was impressed with an interview i had today for an assistant position but got the feeling that the head coach lost other coaches due to his work ethic/expectations...they couldnt keep up. I know i can keep up, i just dont know if i can stay married...know what i mean? anyhow, i want the job but worry that the sunday hours specifically would kill my marriage.

Coach, I can tell from your past post's that you enjoy coaching and love football but if you have to live at your school to work there, I'd find a different job! I'm only a parttime asst. but our schedule during the season is Mon-Thurs 3:30 till whenever but usually around 6:00. Fridays- games, though sometimes I'd hang around with the HC (who is also a friend) and watch game film and let him vent/bounce stuff off me! Then Sunday afternoon, all the coaches came to the school and watched film and planned the next game. Most of the guys always showed up. The schedule for 2 week spring training was the same as season(during school time). The schedule for summer is 2 days a week until legal practice can start then it's 6:30 till dark until school starts again! Usually Mon-Fri(no weekend stuff) but the HC will give the boys a long weekend at times if they earn it. Hardest part for me is the 40 mile round trip to practice and long road games.

This is a great question. I'm the asst who's been pushing for more meetings/hours. When responding, could everyone break the time frames into time with the players and time with just the other coaches. We do: Sat or Sun - 1-2 hours with coaches to review Friday's game and initial thoughts on upcoming opponent Mon - 2:30- 4:00 with players Tues - 2:45- 5:00 with players Wed - 2:45- 5:00 with players Thur - 2:45- 4:00 with players Fri - 3:45- 9:00 games Individual work at home averages 1-2 hours per day

Various amount of time during the day preparing....I'm a teacher so I get a prep plus I don't have study hall during the fall semester! Many hours at night watching film.

During the season we'd stay for maybe a halfhour or so after practice.
Saturdays 8:00- Usually around 1:00 or 2:00, evaluating our film from the night before, then break down at least two games of our next opponent.
Sundays 1:00-until we get down breaking down tendencies (I was on the defensive staff) we usually got down around 5ish.

Week day practices are from 3-5 and then 30 minutes lifting, we stay until the kids leave, usually a half hour to an hour after we finish. Obviously game days are longer. Saturdays we are up here around 7 to get the scouting stuff started, film work, game planing, practice planing, personnel. etc and usually leave around 4-6 Sundays depends on a Saturday game or not. Saturday game means an early start (7 a.m.) to get scouting stuff done, other wise we meet around 1 and are usually gone by 5-6 Our head coach doesn't meet just to be here, so the time is used very well, and is it suprising how quickly it goes. My wife is also cool about it and that is important. I enjoy the weekends the most, thats were I learn the most about the game. Off-seaon- We get out of school at 2:30, we all usually stay until about 4 to give the kids a chance to come in and lift supplemental lifts outside of our athletic period. During Springball-Normal inseason practice day schedule. Expectations are to be here everyday for those hours, for the most part our entire staff does. Our head coach is also very good about giving you time to take care of family/personal issues if they come up. He just doesn't want that privledge abused.

Our Head Coach takes care of the Offense and I take care of the D. I need to be more time conscience becasue of having 2 kids under 4 at home and a wife that wants them to see their dad now and then.
During season I require my assistants to be on time for practice and be enthusiastic. As for weekend time comittment they are only required to be there Saturday until the work is done. We normally are around 8 am to around 2 or 3 for my assistants. I work as the DC from 7am to 4 pm and on sunday I work from 10 am to 2 or 3 pm.
As for the offseason myself and our head coach do most of the offseason lifting. We have other assistants that all have coaching periods but coach different sports so they will help in their offseason in the weightroom. We work 4 days a week in the weightroom from 2-4:30. During spring practice we go from 2-6 4 days a week for 15 days. Our summer program most assistants are around between 5-7 and a few of us are around from 2:30-7 4 days a week. In the summer the more hours you put in the more you get paid.
Overall there are about 3 of us who put in the majority of the hours. Our head coach puts in an insane number of hours but his kids are grown and the youngest is a freshman. As for the rest of us we all have small kids and have to find some balance between hours worked and a divorce.

Off Season M,W,F 6:00 am - 7:45 am 3:30-5:30 pm Weight room ( I supervise ALL the time) T, TH 6:00 am -7:00 am Plyo and agility work (I do it all)
In Season 6:00- 7:30 am Varsity Lift M, W JV Lift T, TH
Pratice Monday 3:35-5:30 Practice (watch film, walk through, run, etc) JV Game at 6:30 I go to all JV games Tuesday 3:35-6:30 Practice Wednesday 3:35-6:15 Practice Thursday 3:35-5:00 Practice Friday Games Saturday- I break down all Friday night film on my own, notes to coaches on what I see, what needs to be fixed, what we did well Sunday- Noon Coaches meeting Watch film from Friday night (with notes handy) Break down film on next opponent usually done by 4:00 or 5:00 (all coaches are expected to be there, but usually does not happen, usually just me and D Coordinator) Sunday night on my own at home, tendencies, etc. I usually watch 2 films of opponent and break down the 2nd one onmy own.
My assistants are good on the filed guys, but are a little less "dedicated" than I am as far as "other" work goes. Sometimes drives me nuts, but can't do a thing about it. I have to "live with the situation" as my AD says.....and people wonder why I look at other football jobs that come open.
I am the head coach by the way.

Nick Hyder, famous coach of Valdosta would meet with his coaches Monday morning after games. They would get to school at 6:00 and meet until school started.

sls and others that review film with players on Saturday: How do you breakdown and be prepared to go over the film with the players by then? I also use Proscout and it takes me 2-3 hours of dedicated solo time to get it cut and marked up(down/dist/los/formation/play/Defense, etc). Then I can spend another 1-2 hours reviewing player performance for each play. Do you do this breaking down as a staff, then immediately meet with the kids? How do you have the upcoming opponent broken down by then? Or do you meet later with the players to review film of new opponent? Lastly, how's the attitude of the players on Saturday? Do they all come in or only the Varsity players?

On Saturday morning we watch about 45 minutes of the previous night's film with the team. Watch it once before meeting with coaches. Ususally only a couple of series. I feel you can watch the first couple of series of a game with the team and they can have a pretty decent idea of how things went and what they did or did not do well. We then have one coach take the team on a cardio run while the other coaches start breaking down film. We do not have the oppoent's tape broke down and scouting report done until Monday.
I do not spend a ton of time breaking down our previous game. There is only so much time and I use it on the opponents.
On Saturday we watch film together as a staff and get basic ideas of what we are going to do. I and DC then break down games on laptops using proscout to get the tendcies and scouting report info for Monday.
Everyone comes, JV practices and contributers from Friday watch the film.
I am also in a very rural economically depressed area. This was end of my 2nd year. First year 60% attendence and I fought with kids, this year I had one kid that was bad. They are getting better about coming.

I break down our game film on Saturday morning at 7am. All I do is match up our rear view with our side view. The Offensive backs come in at 9am and watch the film first. The O-line and defense workout and run at 9 am. At around 10:30 the O-line and Defense watch film in 2 seperate rooms. I don't have to make tapes anymore so that allows me to watch the game before the players get there. we watch tape until around 12:00 to 12:30 then they kids clean the locker facility up. While we do films my DB coach is breaking down the next weeks opponents film.

What state(s) play their JV games on Monday? It seems counter productive to be preparing for a varsity game on friday, but on Monday their is a JV game. Our JV game is either the Thursday before a friday game or Friday after a Thrusday Varsity game.

New Jersey:
Sophomore Game is Thursday school
Freshmen Game is Friday after school
Varsity Game is Friday Night
JV Game is Monday after school
All games vs. the same oppenent.
Some players will play special team on varisty and then start the JV game. The rule for JV is you can play as long as you did not start at that position in the Varsity game.

since i am a coach who believes in throwing the ball, i would rather have time on the field getting reps instead of watching film.
when you throw the ball you really do not need to watch much film. you just need to spend time working against coverages.
our week is as follows
sunday 2-4 we practice 4-6 we watch film monday practice 3 to 6:30 tuesday practice 3 to 6:30 wed practice 3 to 6:30 thrusday practice 3 to 5 game friday saturday off
