Idk. I’ve only ever worked in NC. I’m at the step on the scale that makes 52000 or so. Cost of living is pretty low. I get an extra month from our district for being the HC. Plus a 5400 supplement. So I make around 65 K. That’s pretty good for this poor rural area. I think Asst coach supplements in our district start around 2k. Our Asst football coaches who are the head baseball and softball coaches make more for football than the sport they are the HC for. It is kind of sickening that less than 10 miles away is an SC school of roughly the same size and their HC makes 90-100 HC
That being said. I grew up pretty poor. So 65k is a lot of money compared to what I grew up with in my family.

Anyone work in an area that gives more than 7 years when switching jobs? Around here that seems to be the max and the better paying places give less. It's entirely at the discretion of the district in Michigan (most have a policy written into their collective bargaining agreement). I would say up to five is standard. It is not unheard of for districts in poor financial situations to not offer any credit. Right now we're experiencing a bit of a teacher shortage (boomers/older gen x retiring) so a lot of places are giving full credit - I know we hired a couple people at over 10 years and gave them all their steps.

Sometimes you may see 10!years in wealthier districts but those are rare. My school is currently hiring at step 0 - no experience. For someone like me with 25 years, I can’t change jobs as I’d lose nearly 20 steps wherever I go

We're so glad you are our next HFBC. However, since you are new to Tiger U, we're going to have to pay you like a first time DII coach."

Can't leave if doing so means a $20k paycut. Been practice here for a while. Not sure if it was like this before the 08 recession but pay was frozen where I'm at from the recession for 9ish years. The swing of that though is now that there's a teacher shortage districts are back to giving years because we aren't churning enough new candidates out of universities here to fill needs, so they need to offer a competitive wage to get teachers.

Rarely do you see football coaches hired with much experience as they cost too much. Most football coaches are hired around that 10 year mark. There's not much movement around here for teachers as you just lose too much money to change schools once you've taught 10 years.

I guess it's just different strokes for different folks, but districts in SC have been going the opposite way for many years; things like hiring bonuses, 'giving' extra pay for things like get Natl Board certifications, allowing retired teachers to double dip, etc... Hades, our district pays at some of the best in the state and they are offering a free masters program for teachers which will bump pay about $6000.

Yeah... I laugh at that as well. Some schools don't want to hire a good coach, they want to hire a coach and hope he turns out to be good.
I've been in four states, and have looked at about four more (all west/midwest) and from what I can tell there is a wide range- some give 3-4 years, some 7 years, some give all. I have seen coaching stipends that will give 0, 7 or all years experience.
I'm pretty up on this because I seem to always be looking at new jobs... not because I dislike where I am, but because I would (in theory, it seems) like to move closer to home/family.
Also, I am not thrilled with 4 feet of snow and temperatures that reach 40 below zero (but so far we just have the snow... we haven't even hit 30 below yet).
