So as I woke up at 10am yesterday, it hit me how awesome it is to be retired.
I started thinking about the hours I kept as a long time TXSFB oc. None of this is complaining or anything. Just what it was for a loooooong time.
Monday---be in office by 7am, get school stuff, oc stuff, laundry done before class ------class all day including athletics with a "30" minute lunch where we had to get the kids out of the locker room and get laundry started --------practice, laundry, film until around 7 pm and head home edit---one conference period where we had to hang laundry and go set up the practice field with dummies etc
Tuesday and Wed are the same except after 7 go to jr hi games to watch/"recruit"/help---around there until around 830pm
Thursday same thing except jv game day, fish and jv teams back to back at home or on the road---get home midnight or later edit conference period usually chill here--hang out and bs in the office---then supervise lockerrooms until game time
Friday --game day 7am still, but get home around midnight unless far road trip
Saturday get there by meeting at 8am--generally stayed until 4:30 or so
Sunday-get there by 10am--meeting at noon (HC usually wanted people to be able to go to morning church)---stay until done---offensive guy here so 5 or 6pm usually. Those defensive guys stayed much much later at times.

Texas HS Football is a different world than the one I lived in.
No wonder you're so glad to be retired.

Texas HS Football is a different world than the one I lived in. No wonder you're so glad to be retired. but my time is done This seems absolutely hectic, but something about it excites me so much. I live here in Texas and although I have not lived here a majority of my life, I understand the impact and importance of football culture here. Coaching/Teaching seems so demanding but I feel like it will be one of the most fulfilling things I will be apart of.

I usually don't get home until sometime between 6 and 7 from practice. When I was DC, I would spend each night making scripts, organizing scout cards, and finishing game plans until 9. I would work on the practice schedule for defense and drills for Indy during the school day. We had staff meetings on Sunday nights on Zoom that would last about an hour, otherwise we didn't meet. I still spent most of the weekend game planning when I was DC. If I had to choose between making scripts at night or watching TV, I would pick scripts.

I remember getting up at 3:30am to watch film and work on scripts and there would be an email from my DC time stamped 2:30am. Talk about ships passing in the night.

I hate that you are retired now as you were/are a great coach. I understand the hours and have dealt with them myself. There is something special about coaching in Texas and yes the hours can be long but it is well worth it. Glad to see you are doing well. Hit me up on eamil. Laters Thanks brother. Delete that email so folks don't mess with you though.... Very happy for your success in finding that gig. Great gig. You will do well there.
