I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Been offered the DC position at a different school, but there is not teaching slot open for me right now. I would have to continue teaching where I am now and travel to this school everyday to coach. The two schools are not in the same system and will not play each other. This new position would triple my coaching supplement. What do you guys think? Do you any of you do this? I've had my thoughts in the past about coaches who did this, but now the tables have turned and I don't know what to do.

I've done it for 20 years. It's in a different school system but the school is in our league. It does help that we're not very far apart (12 miles) and that I get out of school an hour before we start practice.
It could be tricky but the coaches at ny teaching school are friends and they make sure that the kids know that I'm looking out for them. If you handle it like an adult it shouldn't be a problem if the schedule fits.

I had the opportunity to go with my head coach as he got a new job, or stay with the school at which I coached under the new head coach. My reason was because I didn't want to teach one place and coach another. In hindsight, it was a very bad decision. The new coach was a great salesman, but the things that he promised didn't come true and I hated life. In fact, 6 of the eight varsity assistants left after the first year working with him. The problem is now that he has made it very difficult for me to get another job by saying that I wasn't loyal when that was the only reason I stayed. I didn't want the kids to have a totally new staff. I was the only coach who stayed from the previous staff, and I started with that group of seniors. Had I gone with my previous head coach, things might have turned out much better, but who knows. Live and learn I guess.
Just some things you need to consider: 1) The money sounds great, but is the coaching situation better? 2) Will the coach give you the control you think you'll have as a DC? 3) Like others, can you get there on time and do the job as effectively as you want?
Good luck!
