just found out our starting center is not coming back to play
how do you guys handle these things?
I know Iowa uses the next man in idea. I like that. how do you implement that into the program?

Had this happen once. Our center shattered his arm about 2 weeks before 2-a-days. We tried the next center, he wasn't very good. Then we moved out QG, and he quit (don't think he could handle starting, he was a perenial back-up). We finally asked a Sr TE/LB, he had no problem and was one of the best centers I've ever had.
I think you have to find someone who is athletic enough to snap well and someone who has good feet. We struggled this past spring trying to find a center. It sucks when the ball can't get to the QB in time and the NG is beating your center of the ball.

well, we look at centers the same way for sure homer
but my main question was not really how to replace that one position
but to build the idea/teamwork/togetherness? to have it just happen where the next guy in line can step up and do a good job even when he may not be the best athlete

We were trying that, it just didn't work. He just wasn't the kind of kid that could get it done.

Those situations where that happens are situations where they have alot of good players and they are only seperated by little things.I had a coach tell me about his starting gaurd going to college as a SS and making it to the NFL.I told him I wouldn't tell people that story. But some schools have alot more talent than others and with all that talent I believe you can make more personel mistakes.

We kind of do this the other way around from having the backup step in. Our starting guard is our back-up QB (he plays CB on defense). I don't have many athletes, fewer who can walk without falling down... I need my best kids on the field- so if our second best guard is also our second best QB- he'll start at guard (unless we go to a 2 QB offense).

You gotta play your best kid, even if he changes a position. In a game if someone goes down my philosophy is get through the game with the backup. If you have a few days to get a better kid I think you have to do it. You owe it to your kids to play the bets you have. JMT.
