The art teacher at our school post some of her students work in the hallway for people to see, since it is October and Halloween the art kids are drawing skulls and skeletons.
One student drew a Bad A$$ skull and I asked if I could get a copy to put on a t-shirt for the defense. The kid was super excited that the football team would have her artwork on them and agreed. I took a couple of pictures and so that I could send it to our t-shirt guy and see what he could do with it.
Today the art teacher came to me and said the parents are upset because they think the child should be paid for the art work. I don't have a problem with that but what is it worth to pay a kid for a drawing that you are going to put on a t-shirt. Plus the way the mom's email read made it seem like she thought we were intentionally trying to rip the kid off. Honestly, I hadn't even thought about paying the kid, she seemed really excited. I looked at it as one of those influencer things were we wear your stuff for free and your name gets out there as an amazing artist.

If there was a price mentioned that might influence whether I'd go through the trouble of getting people riled.

This is parent driven all the way. Kid would have been stoked to have her art work put on those shirts regardless of payment

And, unfortunately, I don't think I'd set the precedence of paying the student for the artwork. Lose/lose because of mom.

Yeah. I’d pull the plug on that just to show the parent that that’s not how it works. Too bad that kid was affected by their stupid parent.

I teach art and my undergrad is in graphic design so my approach/perspective is a little different. The fact the artwork would be used on the shirt is something the kid could use in the future as part of their portfolio. As a student in HS I would of been just happy with that.
As far as a price if I was going to pay $50.00 is about it. The only reason I would worry at all about payment is if you get kids to start doing things like social media, banners and so on then you run the risk of everyone wanting to get paid. There are of course ways around that.
Now if I wanted to be a PITA about it with the parents and try to prove a point that’s a different manner. The. It comes down to things like 1) do I get the original 2) the school now owns the rights to work and those factors would influence the price. I still wouldn’t give more than $50.00 but it would up being a lesson to the parents. Not that they would get it or understand it.

I'd offer $20 while making sure that the girl and parent understand that the shirts are only for in-house use, just give-aways for the football team. You're not planning to sell them and make a profit.

This is my issue; it sets a precedence that I wouldn't want to deal with. We have a few art students who put a lot of time and effort into a mural in the weight room as a part of a project. The polite way to describe the mural is "It brightens up the room". In other words, there's no way we'd pay the kids for the work. And, knowing some of these parents, they'd be demanding compensation, even though the school paid for all of the material and they did a good chunk of it during the school day.

Exactly that. It's not a business. Sets a bad precedent.

One reason I said if I wanted to be a PITA comment was if I get the original artwork. For use of the artwork 20.00 isn’t bad. If they want more than they have to give me the original and I get the rights. This is way off track and more info than anyone wants to know. When it comes to artwork
You can on the work but not the rights. You can own the rights but not the work. You can own the work and the rights.
Similar things can happen with land ownership.
Now if the work was created as a project in school as in the mural example. To me the kids have no rights to compensation there because it was for a grade/part of a class. I’ve seen plenty of murals like you’re talking about. I hate when teachers allow their department to do crap work. In the case with the skull the student created a work for a grade and everything past that is a different issue. It isn’t uncommon for HS kids to sell their art.
So if you have a media class or whatever that creates banners and the such for sports teams or programs as part of grade or curriculum then no money. If it’s outside of class then a student might start to ask for money.
With all of that said sometimes transferring a piece of art into a digital form to be printed on a shirt can suck. That is a whole other set of issues.
So in the end like others have said it’s not worth the hassle.

I actually think this is the best way to go- as it furthers the school’s mission of education. This would teach the student (and parents) how the financial side of art / graphic design works. That might influence the student’s future.

Me personally I wouldn’t pay for it but I’d offer them a shirt. If they say no then I’d find a different skull and let that be the end of it.
If it’s something you’re going to sell to make a profit on, then I don’t see an issue with paying but I agree with the previous post about making sure you get all rights moving forward.

This also might be a bit of a misunderstanding, where the parent's were envisioning the football team SELLING the t-shirts, or otherwise using their child's work in a manner similar to a professional graphic artist. It isn't unreasonable to see someone with this (wrong...) assumption thinking that compensation is deserved.

A free t-shirt.
I would understand the argument for money if you are making money off of it. If not, a free shirt should suffice.

What a shame, another innocent (and awesome) ruined by a parent complaint.
Back in my day the art club designed the homecoming t-shirt every year... and probably paid a fee to be in art club lol
Maybe just talk to the parent and open them up to the fact that if you aren't making any money/don't have any money in the budget to give. or offer like $50 or something.

The rest of the story goes... Nothing, I told our HC about it and he said no, that we would not pay for student artwork. He also mentioned that he didn't want to deal with parents outside of the program and that he wasn't going to answer phone calls or emails about a t-shirt design. I completely agree with him. These shirts were not going to be sold it would be something the starting D gets to wear on our Thursday walk through and then they keep after the season.

At best I would use petty cash and buy a gift card for the student to a pizza place, restaurant, or fast-food joint. The student would probably like that as much as anything. Or, the Boosters' Club could pay for that. If you have a team shirt that the whole team wears, and you have an extra you could git that to the student. Or, possibly give them press-box access for a game or 2 (or for the season if they will do a design for next year (an Offense shirt and a Defense shirt for ya). I would emphasize what another has said about this being on their resume` and in their portfolio for college or future employment. I liked what several people have stated as well..

Offer to have the kid write their signature under the design, gives them credit whenever the shirts are worn.
Great portfolio piece as mentioned before.
