So we had one of the longest/most traffic jammed away subvarsity games of the year last night.... I roll up with on the bus with JVs with about 3 minutes and change left in the 3rd quarter of the Frosh game..... and the last 13+ minutes of that game takes almost an hour b/c of all the flags being thrown to try and keep the game respectable.... but that isn't the most JV thing of the night...
Anyhooo.... We win the toss and receive, promptly drive the length of the field turn it over on downs inside the 5. We stone them 3 and out and then our offense goes to sleep and theirs never got out of bed.... a couple of failed attempts on 4th down by us and then a partially blocked punt and then a punt that didn't make it past the chains on 4th and 9 have the field flipped with our defense having to make red zone stands to preserve the 0-0 tie at halftime.
(we absolutely don't have any type of kicker on the JVs this year.... which leads to...)
So far, either we are the reincarnation of the 1985 Bears on defense or their offense would make you gag... they didn't get an offensive 1st down until halfway through the 3rd.... b/c of a defensive offsides on 4th and 4 from a hard count...
But the best part was the 2nd half kickoff; actually the first 2 second half kickoffs by us were the most JV thing ever. We don't have a kicker, we just have picked out the kid that can best put his toe into the ball off a tee.
So 1st KO, he just gets under it and the ball pooches up to about their 35 with tremendous back spin. It hits the ground and backs up about 4-5 yards and their kids back away from the ball like a shanked punt and we fall on it. We drive the field and score to go up 6-0.
2nd KO, the kicker gets into it pretty good and toes the ball all the way down to the 15, we cover and tackle at the 25ish..... flag on the play; we are offsides. They decide to rekick.... We tee it back up and this time the kicker shanks the ball and it is spinning like a top, but goes 11 yards. Yep the front backs up with a poison call and we fall on it.
Our offense has fully recovered from the its 1st half case of cranial rectosis and drives to score going up 14-0, on way to a 28-0 victory.
To top off the evening, I have lock up and am still sitting in the parking lot at 11:15 when the last kid, who had told me 20 minutes earlier that he had a ride on the way, asked to use my phone. When he had asked whomever he was talking to about why the 3rd person on his list couldn't come pick him up, I said, "Jump in the car I'm talking you home".

OOOHHH, almost forgot this classic from the Frosh game.
We kind of got the game in hand 20- 10 late in the 4th. We're trying to run out the clock, QB gets banged up, no back up, put in RB at the QB, running I/S Zone but the 2 numb nuts keep bouncing outside and running out of bounds, AND the back judges apparently thinks he's getting paid by the hour. He has throw close to a dozen flags just himself.
We have 1st and 10 at their 15, end up with 4th and 45 and and score.

1. By far, the most frustrating thing for me as a middle school and JV coach was the kids getting rides after away games...
2. If this makes you feel any better, your post started out like our VARSITY game went last Friday. Due to turnovers and our time of possession, the other team ran 14 plays the whole first half. We had a 14-0 lead to show for it.

We lost a freshmen game 0-6 last night, with their only points coming after we roughed their punter after a three and out. To make matters worse, we had taken the punt to the house. Whatever the opposite of a barnburner is, this game was that.

Our first freshman game of the year a few weeks back, I realized after a kickoff our tee was still out on the 40. I send a kid that makes straight A's and will be a serious varsity contributor for us next year to go get it. The tee is a neon green (soccer player/kickers personal one). I say, "Hey, D, go get that green block off the field for us. Before they start the play." "YES SIR!!!!! So he sprints out to get it.....and past it....and all the way to the other teams bench to grab a green box off of their bench.

We are a field and boundary based defense if the ball is on the hash The SAM, MIKE, and STRONG SAFETY go to the field. If we are in the middle of the field we call it to the passing strength. The rule is if the ball is in between the goal post we call it to the passing strength, anywhere outside of the goal post and it is "on a Hash". Our practice field only has one set of goal posts. Our Varsity practices going into that end zone and our JV practices going away from that end zone. So during practice JV kids are constantly turning around to see if the ball is in between the goal post, so they can call the defense.
Last JV game of the season, playing our rival, tight game we need to get a stop to get our offense back the ball. Ball is in the somewhere near the middle of the field. I am trying to make a call to send pressure for but I need to know what side the SAM is on to make the call so I am yelling to my LB's for the strength call. Both of my LB's turn around and look behind them to see if the ball is in between the goal post. Sometimes you just have to let things go.

Had a very respectable JV season this year considering that group of boys had not won a game in 3-4 years depending on who you ask. They finished 5-2 but one of those losses was a game that was directly taken from their hands by poor officiating. The side judge on OUR sideline had a vendetta against our community so he would throw any flag he could and when questioned his response was "I remember you from the game on Saturday (A youth game that none of our coaches were at) and I won't tolerate your mouth".
Needless to say we fought through that and lose 24-22 but here is when it gets fun. Our wonderful parents decided to berate the officials AND opposing team after the game and when our DC (his son plays on the JV team) approached the parent to calm him down he was told that he was just the "big time varsity coach and he could shut his effing mouth"
That was a fun couple hours hearing about all of that!

Oh the joys of coaching HS football - especially Sub-Varsity where all the former Little League parents reside. One school I was at had to ban a dad from attending any games because he physically threatened our JV coach for not playing his son more. Sad part was his son was a good kid, just small and unathletic who couldn't play a lick, one game he got into he got concussed because he couldn't protect himself. If we hadn't been so low on numbers he's the kind of kid I would have advised to be a manager if he still wanted to be part of program. Too many parents feel like if their son-daughter is not a starter or even a star it's a reflection on them somehow. Which means the coach is incompetent of course.

Had a grandpa approach me this season and ask why his grandson wasn't playing and I had to politely walk away. Kid was rarely at practice because he was "sick" and when he was there he tended to hide in the back.
Had another kids dad try to come into the locker room during pregame because his kid lied to him about playing football and the dad drove 3+ hours to be there at the game. Dad was fine once we had a conversation but the kid ended up quitting the next week to "work so he could buy a car"

Our last game was against a state-ranked opponent and as outclassed as our varsity was, our JV was even moreso. Well, it's getting towards the end of the JV game and the crew is throwing flags on literally every play. One of our chain gang members told me this. After one of the flags, which went in our oppoent's favor, one of their assistant coaches goes, "Good lord, we're up 40 points. Can we stop throwing flags?!" Just a few seconds later, the official on that sideline could be heard saying into his radio to the rest of the crew: "Hey guys, it's a 40 point game. Can we stop throwing flags?"

Our JV numbers were slim enough this year that everybody got to play, so we were able to avoid that headache. This was not the case for varsity though. We had a kid that was similar to the one you mentioned - senior who hadn't played football since freshman year, transferred in and attended our alternative program after having gotten into some trouble at another high school. He was a nice kid but wildly undersized and had no idea what to do. After week one dad called me ( not the head coach, no idea where he got my number) to talk about how he felt like we should've put his son in at some point in the game (we won but not by a huge margin). He made specific note of how he drove all the way to the game and wanted to have a picture or video of his son to put on social media. He goes on to talk about how he knows that his son isn't that bad (he was) and that some of his best memories from high school football were while losing games. This gave me a chuckle because his school didn't win a single varsity game in his time there (we were in the same conference). He ended up calling other coaches after other wins for the same reason until we finally got him in a game and dad got his video for social media.
