Now I know there's a shortage of them and that the job is very difficult and that we can't play without them; but does anyone else notice that refs really seem to make it about them, ESPECIALLY the 1st game of the season? And also, whenever an official's crew shows up super early and is dressed to the 9's, it almost ALWAYS means it's going to be a long night.

If you have officials show up "early" and dressed professionally, you should be happy. Will only be a "long night" if your kids insist on violating the rules. Coach against that. The officials are not your enemy-out to hurt you.

We had a deaf side line official at our tune up. Really hard to call a time out

First game of the year we had the typical “Those footballs are illegal”. We use Team Issue during the season which is not the balls you use in the playoffs. Had an official one time not allow us or our opponent use them in a regular season game because the laces were not white. We were told it was the first rule in the rulebook.
We also have an official in the area that refers to himself in the third person and uses a nickname.
I’m pretty easy to get along with as a coach when it comes to officials. Some I feel like must of been abused on the sideline or something for how defensive they get.

The officials are not your enemy-out to hurt you. I agree but that's not always the case. We had a DL lockout against an OL our first game about five years ago. He ran his feet and the OL ended up on the ground. The refs threw a flag and kicked the DL out because he apparently punched the OL. Then they kicked out a DL for tackling the FB on Midline when the QB kept it. There are cases where the refs make it about them and you can't coach against it.

The last few years we've had games either on Thursday or Saturday and the refs were great. If that's what it takes to get rid of some crews who make it about them, then I'm okay with Thursday or Saturday games.

I have no problems with refs, other than theyve continued this trend of never calling offensive holding

The shortage of officials is a real problem in our state.
Games are having to be rescheduled (from Fridays to Thursdays or Saturdays) because of it.
Not to mention Sub-Varsity.
Can't help but affect the quality of the sport.

You better be happy in what you get, there have been games moved to Thursday and Saturday because of shortage. Same for us. We currently have 5 Thursday games, 3 Friday games and 1 Saturday. We normally end up with a Thursday every other year or so because of stadium availability issues but this is all ref shortage driven.

In our first game the officials allowed our opponent to punt with 12 on the field. Twice. In a row. First time I go out to white hat and ask him to watch next time. I think they had 12 on the field on that punt. Next punt. Sure enough 12 again. We returned it for a TD. So I didn’t feel like that was the time to complain.

Can't help but affect the quality of the sport. What are the contributing factors for the official shortage? Personally… -some coaches/fans just being generally unbearable. Loud, rude, obnoxious. Fans are often easy to laugh off/ignore by their lack of knowledge, but still not an enjoyable place to be. But when coaches don’t even know/understand the rules/calls and want to cause a scene it’s awful. -Multiple times coaches becoming irate and accusing me of effecting the outcome of a game (several times it came after only a few plays and 1 penalty). And I can honestly say I have never been involved in a game where officiating effected the outcome. -being cornered in a school after a game by coaches and questioned/guilted about a call -being approached and threatened in the parking lot by an assistant coach -being threatened on many occasions by fans. -several times requiring a police escort to leave the field, and even at the gas station after a game. -witnessed another official who was threatened to be shot by a semi pro-player (who was a felon, and lost his NFL opportunity because of off the field and had been in and out of jail for violent offenses) -lots of time for ok pay. A single varsity game takes about 5 hours when you consider travel, having to be there an hour before the game, and the game itself. Pay around here varies from $65-90 for one varsity game. $130-160 for a freshman/varsity double header. Pair this with all of the above and it’s hard to get guys in and retain them as officials.

Older guys getting out and dearth of younger-new officials getting in (plus the reasons given by 19holmes).
