I see a lot of teams College and High School with their helmet decals already applied during pre-season. I know reconditioning companies can put them on as part of the recon process. Do your teams have a tradition of the helmet decals?

We usually put them on the week of the first game. I told the kids it was so they'd look nice, but it was honestly usually because I forgot to order them.
My second year as a HC at one place I completely forgot to order any. So, we went with a single orange stripe down the middle of a navy helmet (had a bunch left over from previous years). I told the kids it was to complete the "throwback" look we were going to with our new jerseys (think the Bears '46 throwbacks that are navy with orange numbers). Along with our smashmouth offense and a 6 game win streak to finish the year, the look became extremely popular and we wore it the next 6 years I was HC there.

We usually just put them on the day before first game. Never heard of reconditioning companies putting them on though.

Personally I hate them. We have gold helmets with green facemasks, and as a traditionalist, I like the plain helmet. If I had to pick a decal, I would go old school Alabama with the numbers on the side.
However, we use our "athletic logo" which is close to the Atlanta Falcons logo on the side of our helmets now. What a pain because it becomes a distraction that every kid HAS TO HAVE! Myself along with 1-2 other coaches will apply them the day before our first scrimmage after we name our season captains.
At other schools when I was the head coach, we did it the Monday of our first game week. We also invited dads to come and "get involved" if they wish. We would order in pizza or pasta and make it a sort of coaches-dads bonding event.

Our lids look pretty sweet once the stripe goes on.

When I was HC we put them on the day before the first game. Other places I've been we put them on at some point the week of the first game.

This year we will be putting them on the Monday before the first game. In the past, at other school, we invited dads to help us but it sounds like it will just be us this year.
