In the last couple of months we have had 5 kids that have been getting up at 5:30am to come to the weightroom. Then driving to the school and parking their car and not coming into the school.
On whatever tracking device it looks like they are going to weights...one kid came 3 times out 24 and his parents thought he had perfect attendance.
Why?? 1. claimed he got a better work out at the YMCA- his parents said he had never been there either 2. Smoked pot on the way to school and didn't want to get caught so he left his phone in his car and walked around for an hour and 15 minutes. 3. other kids made fun of him because he didn't actually lift when he was there, they road him about finishing lifts. He was bullied 4. got picked up by his girlfriend and went to her house, no further details 5. got picked up by a friend and went out for breakfast, chicken fried steak and eggs specifically
Deep Breath and get ready for summer camps!

#5 would be in trouble for not inviting me.
#4 is undefeated
There are going to be a lot of coaches asking you about these 530 AM lifts…….that mandatory?

We got 530 lift time. We also got 645, 8 and 915. I wouldn't worry. Tell parents he wasn't there the rest is on kid. Sounds like his patents and him are going to make excuses and it's not worth arguing. If he was deflowering his girl then they may want to maybe have a grandkid. That's what I would have ended with in conversation. Plus, depending on their ages there maybe some legal consequences.

This fits in with something I have assumed is coming for a while now- schools mandating that we take daily attendance for practice (and all extracurricular activities).
I know it seems silly, but I'll break down the argument that will be used for it: these are children, and they are our (the school's) responsibility until they arrive safely home. We are expected to keep tabs on them, and know where they are. If a kid was ditching school, say he left campus after 1st period and didn't go to 2nd, we are expected to catch that with attendance; notify parents and make sure things are okay. Along those lines, if kid went to school but ditched practice after school and unfortunately something bad happened, he would still be our responsibility.
This is why I've been waiting for districts to start mandating attendance policies for athletics. Similar to school, they just create a class on the teacher portal and you can input attendance on your phone. If Johnny was at school all day, but not at practice, it is noted in attendance and the athletic secretary calls home.

We keep attendance. It's not on computer do it by hand. There attendance determines a lot of things like gear, stripes, etc. Attendance also determines playing time. The OP is keeping attendance. I would say this kid will not make it through the season, I could be wrong, I would not worry or count on him.

My best friend in high school ran cross country. Their practice course was through town. About a quarter of a mile through town was a subway that his girlfriend worked at. He would stop there on the teams way out and get a sub and hang out. Then when the team got back he would hop back in with the pack and go back to school. He did this his whole senior year, every practice. He was their best runner and a state placer so none of the runners ratted him out in fear of the coach kicking him off. The coach never found out until the banquet when another runner told the story.

I get it, sometimes you are stuck in a place where you are handcuffed to certain times because they work on the farm but why not 7pm, 8pm, 9pm at night? At least you aren't risking a kid falling asleep at the wheel and getting in a fatal car crash (which happened in my time). I get having to take attendance but I would re-think those times... God Bless ya coach!

Way back when I worked for a very young HC, he wanted to have an open weight room policy in the summer so kids who worked could easily drop by any time from 8AM-8PMin the summer outside of the dead period. There were just 3 of us on staff and only a little over 30 kids on the team, so this meant we all had to be there for daily 4 hour shifts. Only about 18 kids regularly lifted, so we were lucky to have 4-5 there at any time. The real head scratching part is that the HC wasn’t some obsessive, super competitive grinder. He refused to break down film at all, we only practiced 2 days a week until school started, his only coaching point on defense was “fly to the ball,” and his offensive strategy was to run the ball every single down to kill clock until we were down by 35+ and got a running clock in the second half

Extreme, yes. Ineffective, yes. But interesting.

That’s certainly one way to put it. This the same guy I mentioned in another thread who was always griping about our players’ lack of football IQ and blaming losses on that He’s also the HFC who told me he refused to go to clinics because he already knew everything at just 25 years old since he'd played 3 years of NAIA ball and helped maintain the field as an undergrad assistant his senior year. About half of the "weird coaching" stories I share on here come from my time working under that guy and it was only for a year. After that, he left to become OC of a TFS team in KY, then was out of football soon after that. The last I heard, he was putting his knack for innovative strategies to use as a school administrator.

Well, it's not in my control. The 530 is co ed. The next one is boys. The next one is girls. Then middle school. It could be done differently but each session is pretty well attended.

I've always taken attendance. It's CYA for all things. But do you submit attendance immediately to the office, so that it can be cross-referenced while you are at your activity? Thats more of what I was implying. Yes indeed... Two summer ago,we caught one of our boys fooling around with his girlfriend in the backseat of his car in the middle of morning lifting. Long story short, admin and parents got involved. The girl's parents tried to claim that I was negligent because their kid came to weights and I didn't supervise her. But... She didn't show up for weights and I could prove it through my attendance sheet. They dropped her off, she went straight to the back seat of his car and texted our player with an invite. He asked to go to the bathroom, disappeared and I hunted him down when he was taking his time.

I to do the same for morning weights, but have never done it for practice after school; where we send the attendance to someone in the office, nor have I ever been a part of a program that does. I think that may be coming soon.

I understand the legality issue of it, but Jesus, could we actually expect some form of responsibility for players?
No wonder we're churning out 18 year old 5th graders.

If parents don't teach responsibility to their kids-pass it off to teachers-coaches (and blame them when kids screw up) - Then no. BITD parents supported "authority figures" when they disciplined their kids. Now a days parents blame the authority figures for their kids failings because they are afraid it makes them look bad. Plus many of them don't want to confront their kids for misbehavior. Or in the more extreme cases - parents just don't care what their kids do or don't.

It's an important document to have if a parent is throwing a fit over discipline for absences or tardiness to practice. Which, in my world, happens frequently.

I think that may be coming soon. Taking attendance at practice can be a pretty good idea, especially if attendance has been an issue team-wide. I've done it as a position coach and called the parents of my OL and DL who weren't there just to check on the kids, make sure everything's ok, and remind them they are expected at practice. That can help a lot, IME. If you do stretch lines, this can be pretty easy. Just assign everyone to a spot in the line, similar to an assigned seat, and mark the missing players. If each position coach will handle the calls, that keeps the workload manageable while also helping to hold accountability and build that relationship. I've never heard of having to submit this to someone in the office. If they mandate it, that seems like overreach that would annoy the hell out of me, and if you simply start handing something to the secretary or someone else who does not have this in their typical duties, I wouldn't have much faith in them actually keeping up with it. It could be a good thing to keep on file in the coaches' office for documentation purposes, though.

Personally, if I still coached and there was a 530 am lift session, uhm....I would be absent also zzzzzzz.

Tried the early morning thing during the season when I was coaching but found out it wasn't worth the trouble. Tried two days (one day for lower body, one day for upper body). Had many of the same issues most of you mention. Following year I went to the same format but changing it to Monday (legs) before practice, and Wednesday before practice (upper body). Worked like a charm. Had a few try early but ended up in epic fail for them. From that point on no more BS.

Just to clarify a few things: 1. the weight room is not climate controlled and is 85 degrees plus most days by 10:00am in the summer and no air flow. 2. Our strength program has been taken over by a regional entity and they provide the trainers. They are on iste from 5:30am to 2:30pm. 3. Our facility is not very large and we roll through with 30-40 kids per hour from 6am to noon. remaining groups are smaller. 4. parents track kids and we take attendance. We do that because it is a class for credit. We are also to have attendance for in season practices as a part of our state guidelines. 5. As unpaid coaches for the summer we rotate to maintain a presensce.

I've always taken attendance... and if kids weren't there I called them or text them to see where ... and if it was excessive I contacted parents. I made them tell me the reason for missing. Of course they can make it up but usually u can tell if that happening. I got more hassle from kids and parents for asking why and calling than I ever dreamed... this generation does not understand communicating that you are not coming in. Makes planning practice really tough.

Players have missed to work at the pool, take driver's training, go to a family reunion, etc. Every year players will miss practice for something that I would never miss practice for. I can't control that. Usually those players aren't going to start anyways so why would I get upset about it?

Had the same thing happen to a buddy of mine. Kid parked across the street at a Love’s convenience store and slept. Coach caught him after a few times. When the mom asked later that season about why he wasn’t playing more my friend to her “he was in love’s” and walked off. Hilarious
