Does your association allow for bye weeks in the schedule. By this I mean you have say 11 weeks in which you can play 10 regular season games. Or does your association's calendar allot the same number of regular season weeks as the maximum amount of games, leaving no room for a bye. In other words, if 10 games is the max allowed, the regular season window is 10 weeks.

We have a 10 week regular season but you don't have to play 10 games I want to clarify then, I am not saying that teams are forced to play a game every week. I was asking if someone's association allows them time within the regular season to play the maximum number of games AND have a bye week within the calendar. So in this case, if 10 games is the max, and there are 10 weeks in the regular season, your association does not have bye weeks built in (based on my definition here)

Teams can have a bye week here if they have a zero week game, which is a game one week before Labor Day weekend.

10 week season, but we are allowed to request to play week 'zero'. If you play week zero you just have a bye at some point in the season.
A fair number of school do this.

To those with a “weak 0”, why isn’t that just week 1? Just out of tradition?

To those with a “weak 0”, why isn’t that just week 1? Just out of tradition? Kind of....When I started 30 years ago almost no one did it. Some smaller school need the 3 weeks of preseason to get in shape/get kids out. Also, I think part of it is just how the calendar works. State championship is 1st weekend in December. 5 playoff rounds, 10 weeks regular season; counting back 15 weeks from the 1st of December = 1st game. 3 weeks before that week is the preseason. 18 weeks total. Plus the association has a dead week before the preseason and that is our coaches clinic week. Plus that allows the week after the finals for the coaches' all star game, and then the next week for the Shrine Bowl. Everything is done before Christmas.

To those with a “weak 0”, why isn’t that just week 1? Just out of tradition? I was a player in HS when we started "week 0" games in TN. At the time, I thought it was because our first game was before school had even started back, which hadn't happened before on the old calendar. It can still be that way, though as the standardized testing calendars have pushed schools to open earlier and earlier (our first day of school is in 2 weeks) that's not always the case. I believe it was likely due to the practice of a 10 week regular season ending at the end of October, then playoffs, before the "week 0" and he option of a bye that it created was even on the table, but since it was optional they probably just called it "Week 0." For scheduling purposes, we don't need to do anything special for a Week 0 game. It's just one of the possible 11 weeks where we can play. We are also not obligated to play a full 10 game schedule here, AFAIK, though district games do have to be played. Districts vary in size from as small as 4-5 schools to as many as 8-9, the last time I checked.
