I feel as if most places were like that a decade or so ago. But then studies came out about how long summers disproportionately impacted low income students in a negative way, and thus changes were implemented. Now, most everywhere I see starts school up early to mid August. Schools in MI typically don't get out until first or second week in June. Tourism and agricultural industries are still big here so starting later is important. In fact for awhile it was a state law schools couldn't start until after Labor Day unless they got a waiver. I grew up in California (80s & 90s) and coached out here for my first couple years (up until 2007). All of those years school would not start until after Labor Day. In fact teams would all be in two-a-days during late August and early September, that why we all had the mantra "during Labor Day we Labor". School would usually end mid June. I moved out to Arizona for a few years in 2008, and was shocked that they started school in early-mid August. But when I moved back to California in 2012, they were on the same boat. Now everyone out here starts school in Early-Mid August, and is done late May-early June. To account for the shorter summer they have added a week onto Christmas Break, a week onto Easter Break, do a full week for Thanksgiving, and most either through an extra Spring Break week in, or add a bunch of 3 & 4 day weekends throughout.

carookieI'm not disputing the 'summer vacation lag'; that is pretty widely accepted for lower level kids..... That disparity from 1st grade through 8th grade (pre HS) is roughly calculated at 7 summers x 3 months = 3 years behind in schooling. HOWEVER there is a LOT of supposition in that calculation. It takes nothing into calculation the input of parenting..... but that wasn't the point I was making. I was simply stating that the school has a set number of days (for SC it is 180 kids/190 for teachers). It doesn't matter if you start on 8/1 or 9/1; the calendar is set to run 190 days from the time said calendar starts. The time I referenced simply meant that I could rent a 12 person beach house for almost 1/2 of the cost if I had to take my vacation in June and I like that set up.

Actually, that summer vacation lag is precisely due to parenting when other things are controlled for. What is being discussed is the division of those 180/190 days right?

For the most part it really doesn't matter unless a school district has some type of alternative school calendar. There might be an odd/extra holiday/day off, but unless those have to be factored in the calendar will run out. I just mentioned that I like getting out before Memorial Day b/c I could get much more vacation for my dollar. Also starting 2 weeks sooner didn't bother me b/c I was at the school coaching football anyway.

I agree. In NC we haven’t been allowed to start school until the week after Aug 25. That’s 25 days of official practice with at least 1 game before school where you really have to worry and work to make sure all your kids get to practice and on time. Also, as Woodall mentioned. You are there anyway. So you might as well start knocking out school Days!
