We are a small school with only about 30-40 in our program total. Typically we've done all 3 phases of the game in a 2-2.5 hr practice session 4 days per week during season. I have run across a few guys that use the following model:
Monday Mix
Tuesday Offense
Wednesday Defense
Thursday Mix
Anyone else do it this way? If so, are you totally one side of the ball on Monday or Tuesday or do you do both, but with one side of the ball getting less time? What do you see as the advantages or disadvantages in a model like this? Thanks in advance.
PS- I'll take other ideas besides this as well. Looking to improve our practice setup as I currently think it's not working.

It sounds reasonable.
Your 2-way players must get reps on both sides of the ball.
Some of your younger guys also get reps when they work as replacements for your 2-way guys during the "mix" days.
Who knows...maybe you'll find a diamond in the rough!

We are in similar situation. Last year we had a practice schedule like so: Monday- Offensive-80 min, Specialty- 30min , Defense-20 min Tuesday- Same as Monday but offense and defense change Wed- Both Offense and Defense 50 min Special 15 Thursday- all teams 30 min

We run both offense and defense on every day Monday - Thursday. We alternate each day on which side of the ball goes first (offense goes first in practice on Mon and Wed with defense going first on Tue and Thur). The offense and defense get @ 55 minutes a piece on each practice day with the leftover time towards the end of practice used for special teams.

We go...
M: DEFENSE T: OFFENSE W: MIX TEAM ONLY Th: MIX RUN THRU
I think it helps to have the "one sided" days early in the week. They have time to process, ask questions, film before Wed and Thu.

I'm curious why no split on Monday? I would think you would want to get both game plans in on that day. For others, on offense only days, is it truly offense only, or do you do "some" defense?

To piggyback on OP. With two way player scheduling, how does the days when you have JV games adjust when practicing?

To piggyback on OP. With two way player scheduling, how does the days when you have JV games adjust when practicing? I am in the same situation - maybe 50 kids in total both varsity and JV. Thursday is more of a prep, scenarios, situational day. This year we’ll do more indy and group period on Thursdays. Anything that’s team has to be done on air due to the lack of numbers without JV practicing.
