We have a football class......but its not necessarily what you describe. In season we lift, and do chalk talk/film study. Out of season it is a strength and conditioning class with some character development thrown in.
Its only open for football players, and I pretty much have control of who gets in or out. We dont do any history of the game, or strategy other than what we need to learn for our schemes/gameplan etc...

Anyone out there teach a class about all things football? History, strategy, conditioning, programming, etc.? Does the class also lift/condition? We do not but I've proposed it twice. Would solve a lot of problem. Have a coach run it, adds a section to the PE dept which in turn cuts down numbers for the other classes (ours are always too large). Probably grow your FB numbers if kids can do a sport and get PE credit. Get kids home sooner from practice so they can work and / or do HW at a more reasonable hour and get to bed. Prob cut down on kids quitting b/c they have to transition to a normal PE class Would improve practcie attendance since it's part of the school schedule. I'm sure it would improve performance based on increased attendance, numbers and time frame in which you can all watch film, weight train, speed development together on a regular basis without losing field time. So many advantages. I think admin is short sighted not to consider this at all schools. Furthermore, I know of some schools that also include summer camp as a summer PE class. I believe this to would be beneficial and have many of the advantages to it listed above.

We have a weight lifting class specifically for football players, but not what you were describing.
On a side note, at my previous school, I taught a class called "Research" where I taught kids how to use Hudl. They would sign up to film practices and games for the various sports and fill in the columns for stats. No need to pay for Hudl Assist when it was just a homework assignment for my students.
They also used Canva to make game week posters to put up around campus and helped players with their hightlight films at the end of the season.
It was a great class and if you can talk your admin into adding it, I highly recommend it.

If we were to do that (have a football class) in TN it would be considered a practice activity and is limited to 6 athletes a day in the off season until spring ball. I asked to do a football 101 open to anyone that wanted to attend and not mandatory and was told no.
"Practice – Any interaction between a coach and student-athlete(s) where instruction, teaching, coaching, etc., is occurring. Happenstance communications between coach and student-athlete(s), in circumstances where attendance by the student-athlete is neither expected nor required, are not considered to be practice. Such communications may not, however, be used to circumvent the requirement in open facilities that a coach act in a supervisory capacity only. In addition, try-outs are considered practice."

I have 1st period every day with our kids for "Competitive Athletics" and "Advanced Weightlifting - Football". IN-SEASON.....Mon - Wed = Workouts ..........30 min = Dynamic Warmup and Speed Work ..........60 min = Weightlifting .....Thu = Sub-Varsity Gameday ..........Sub-Varsity = Game Walkthru on Field ..........Varsity = Final Gameplan Meeting/Test .....Fri = Varsity Gameday ..........Sub-Varsity = Day After Stretch/Workout for half period, watch game film from previous day for other half. ..........Varsity = Game Walkthru on Field OUT OF SEASON.....5 Day School Weeks ..........Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri = Workouts ..........Wed = Playbook, Character, Teambuilding, etc... .....4 Day School Weeks ..........Workout all 4 days .....3 Day School Weeks ..........Workout for 2 Days ..........Playbook, Character, Teambuilding, etc... on 1 day We don't do ANYTHING after school out of season. I want the kids playing other sports. Depending on the group and where they are, we have done anything you can think of during those Playbook/Character/Teambuilding days.

I recently inquired about instituting a Athletic's PE class mainly for football. With college requirement being what they are, how did you sell it to Counseling Dept. to make room for it and how does it fit into the students schedule?

I didn’t have to. It was in place when I got here. And it’s generally in place at most schools around here.
