I fill out the flyer's that are sent by the colleges, but if I don't hear anything from any of them (they don't send flyer's). I start calling...
If the player is not a division 1 athlete then I call IAA Schools; if he 's not a IAA athlete, then I call Division 2 schools...etc
It all depends on the caliber of athlete, his SAT score, his cumulative GPA and his perspective major. If all that is good... I will find a home for him. If his grades are not up to snuff and he's a PTPer then the next step is to call the local JUCO's.
As far as time, I make it a priority to get it done usually b4 or after school or during brunch or lunch time.
My QB coach makes highlight films for each senior; he teaches a video editing class. I think he even has his students cut up game tapes for extra credit.
Thats it in a nut shell.... hope that helps...

Not the head coach, but have wondered if there is more our HC can do as far as getting kids to school. We have traditionally been a 2A school, and once in awhile kids have gone from our small town to play college ball. We even had one kid go to Arizona State, he was breaking state receiving records. We get flyers from d3 schools all the time, but with our growth and us approaching 1100-1200 students, we have some good youngsters, that have the "potential" to go onto college. I am not saying d1, but somewhere where they don't have to pay. I have seen some of the d2's in the Rocky Mountain League, such as Western from Colorado, I think it's Adams and or Mesa State. I know once in awhile 1 or 2 of our kids could play there. We do have a few good JuCo's, but they get most if not all of their kids from the bigger schools. So after all of this ranting, I have always wondered if there is more our HC can do, I am very interested to hear what other coaches do. We do

1. I work the hallways like a politician in election year. I am always talking to kids who are on the bubble. Then working the kids who already play who are his buddies to work on him. I am the only coach (in fact the only boys coach period) in the building so I do not get alot of help here. We also do things to reward kids who stay out 4 years etc.
2. I have a prep period so really I have to spend a great deal of time before and after school getting stuff ready. Films I do over the weekend. I supervise the wt room workouts as well so I am stretched very thin but we manage.
3. I have very few athletes who are at the level where they can play college football. I fill out the pamphlets that come from the colleges or email the coach back when I get the opportunity. A couple of seasons ago I had a kid get some serious d-2 recruiting so I printed up a bio sheet on him with all that info so I could just print it and fax it. Saved time. I have also talked to some Juco coaches in the area if a kid is good enough to play at that level. I have had a couple play d-3.
4. At our Parent meeting I make sure all parents understand academics come first. But in terms 1on1 unless a player is an academic liability to our team usually there is not a discussion with parents about thier son.
