I read tothehouses' message on wanting to coach baseball and decided to get some feedback on my situation.
I just took an assistant HC/OC position which is great. LOVE IT!!
Now, the position also came with the HC position for the baseball team.
This is an inner city school and the baseball team is very very bad. I know they did not win a game this year and Im not sure about recent years.
It is normally a situation where the game is over after 2 innings. They only play a district schedule so it is really only a 10-12 game season.
They had to cancel a game last tuesday due to one of their players getting into a fight and being suspended. So losing 1 player caused them to forfeit.
I wont take over until next year. But here is the kicker. I have never coached nor played baseball. I do feel that my abilities as a coach will allow me to do a decent job, but just how hard is this going to be??
I was about 300lbs in highschool and was a fat linemen and the only thing I did in track was the shot and disc. But, I have coached up 5 different 44' + triple jumpers and 4 different 21' + long jumpers in the last 4 years.
I just researched and learned and now consider myself to be a pretty good jumps coach.
So do you think baseball is a game that someone who has never played nor coached can walk into and be decent at coaching it?

I am both a baseball and football coach and I do believe baseball is easier t coach than football, due to less preparation, but as in any sport you need to know something about the game to be effective. From the sound of it the team you are coaching needs someone that can instill more than the proper techniques, they need all of the other things that you probably possess as a "coach". I would read as much, watch as much, as talk as much baseball as I could if I were you.

Thank you guys very much for your responses. I will just take the approach that yall gave me. I will just learn as much as possible about the game. Of course Ive been around the game and have played my share of back yard baseball, but have never officially played. But I do know the general rules and techniques of the game.
I just need to learn how to coach it.
