Hey coaches, with the world slowly coming back to normal I am looking forward to clinic season and looking to be a speaker this year:
any advice on preparing the presentation? Things to expect? Good one liners for hecklers?

I've never seen a heckler at one and I've been going for years. I've seen people walk out, I've seen silly questions, I've seen those in audience try to dominate the speaker's time---but never seen a heckler. Just be prepared, present on something you know a lot about, and be prepared for questions. It's just ball coaches talking ball---approach it that way.

Good one liners for hecklers? don't be a jerk or try to big time the guy in the room helping you and presenting you as the presenter they are usually other guys just like you also make sure your technology is ready and has been ultra tested on the hotel's wifi or have other means without wifi available

Go slow. You will be talking faster than you think...Make sure you have enough material. If you show film (and you should) make sure it is of good quality

Describe your team's make up and community/School support. It is good to know going in if you are doing things with D1 kids and 10 coaching supplements or the opposite.

If you have hand-outs make them supplemental to your talk, rather than a copy. Once it becomes clear that they have everything on paper they figure that they don't have to listen since they can just read it later.
Draw up your diagrams the right way, with your team on the bottom so that what's right or left on the diagram is also the listeners' right or left.

The big thing I want from the speaker is to give me something specific I can take away, regardless of my circumstance.
As far as a joke, I remember in one of the Nike COY clinics a joke and I don't even remember which coach told it but it cracked me up. I don't even think I knew what it meant when I first read it but have found actual applications to it over the year.
It went something like this...
There's two bulls on top of a hill. Ones old and ones young. They are looking down over the hill at a pasture full of cows. The young bull looks at the old bull and says "hey let's run down there and fuckk one of those cows." And the old bull looks at the young bull and says "how about we walk down there and fuckk them all."

I once spoke at clinic and after the usual Thanks for the introduction-it's an honor to speak here-introduced my staff, I started with this one: "I kind of feel like Madonna's latest 'boy toy'. "I know what to do but not sure I can get the job done to your satisfaction. "However I'm going to give it my best shot!" That was 2007 so may not resonate now like it might have then though.

I once heard the late HOF Nebraska coach Bob Devaney, perhaps the most successful coach of his era, speak.
He was the most humorous man I ever saw in person, laugh out loud funny. Almost had me in tears.
But I can't remember one thing he said about actually Coaching Football.

Skip the slide where you explain that you chose XYZ Scheme because your team isn't blessed with big linemen year after year and all of your opponents are.
90% of clinics have that slide and it drives me insane.

Do not spend any amount of time going over your resume. Of all the speakers I've walked out on, they all started with 10-15 minutes of resume telling me how awesome they were.

A football camp was being held in a mountain camp, and on the first night the players were sitting around the campfire bragging on how tough their team was. The kid from Roosevelt High told everyone that before every practice they did 50 Lombardi's. His team was the toughest. The kid from Grant High said they did 50 Lombardis before AND after practice and they were the toughest. The kid from Lincoln High told everyone that they're the toughest because they not only did Lombardis before and after practice, they also ran the bleachers. Everyone was bragging except for the kid from King High. He just sat there by the campfire stirring the hot coals...with his dick.

Guy had coached at least 2-5 D1 kids every year and had multiple NFL cats in his 20-30 years as a HC. Guy would say stuff like "Now, what if we put our 1 tech to the strong side? How you gonna deal with that?" And just stood there silently like he had just reinvented the wheel. Then he said "Ponder that!" I lost it. He was a horrible speaker. I didn't leave though. It was a train wreck I had to watch.

I don't know why but this just struck me, I am a defensive guy and have always drawn the plays with the offense on the top of the page and the defense on the bottom and never really thought about why I did it that way (hudl's default is backwards so you have to flip it). I was today years old when I read this and realized that is why you draw it that way! HaHaHa, thank you for this.

Hey coaches, with the world slowly coming back to normal I am looking forward to clinic season and looking to be a speaker this year: any advice on preparing the presentation? Things to expect? Good one liners for hecklers? I don't want to jinx you or worry you more... But I gotta tell you- I was speaking at a USA FB Clinic and about 10mins in the power went out on the right side of the room...where my mic/computer/projector was plugged in. So I did about 20-25mins of the clinic with no technology. Luckily, my computer was running on battery so I had the cliff-notes version to refer to. As soon as the power came on I started ripping through the most important things on the slides/videos I could muster...crisis SEMI-averted. I got more compliments on that presentation than any one I had given before. The room stayed full and I met with whomever wanted to meet over the weekend to go over the videos etc...in person as they wanted. I think the most important thing is to remember that you are serving your fellow coaches- nothing stands in the way of that. And do the best you can...and be you! Nothing to be nervous about lol

The problem with speaking at clinics is two-fold.
If you are speaking on offense or defense (Xs and Os), the only audience you will attract are guys who already run your system, may be considering running it, or your opponents.
If you speak on coaching a position (techniques-fundamentals) you'll only get the guys who coach that position.
Also, if you're a fabulously successful coach who's going to talk about your program-organization, you may get a big crowd but a lot of them will leave there saying "Well if I coached in a place like that I'd win too!"
When I was a young buck I heard Gerry Faust, then the coach at Cincinnati Moeller HS before his ill-fated tenure at Notre Dame. Guys were actually snickering if not laughing out loud because his situation was so vastly different than where they coached. He seemed flummoxed by the reaction he was getting.
And has been posted - don't waste time going over your resume. Somebody must have thought you had something worthwhile to offer or you wouldn't be there, and probably covered your bio enough in your introduction.
Stick to your assigned topic, film-handouts are always appreciated, and leave time for questions (or be available afterwards).

You might want to avoid using phrases like "stabber horning up to red side raptor"

The best intro that I have heard at a clinic: "Everyone knows why I was asked to speak here today... I had the best athletes this year"
