Here is where we are currently:
9-12 112 athletes- 10 paid coaches (2 split a contract) 1 volunteer coach

HC/OC/QB
DC/LB
JV HC/OL
JV OC/WR (works outside of district)
JV DC/DL
9th HC/OL/DL- 9th DC
9th OC/RB's
FB/TE's (works outside of district)
DB's (works outside of district)
OLB/Special Teams (works outside of district)

Practices are structured O for 10-12 and D for 9th grade simultaneously and then switch- specials are run on opposite ends of the practice area with a 9th on 9th group and a Varsity vs. JV group.

When we do skelly/inside sessions the break down is:
QB/WR coach with any offensive skelly group-
DB/OLB coach with any defensive skelly group-
9th grade coaches plus volunteer with 9th grade inside groups
OL/DL/LB/FB-Y coaches with Varsity inside groups

Game organization- Varsity
HC/OC- O play calling, special teams over views, timeouts
DC- D play calling
OL- booth and tech support
WR- personel changes
DL- rotation of athletes
OLB- booth special teams
DB's-KO/KOR on the field
Volunteer- special teams
9th grade coaches are not required at games-- they usually are there and watch signals, check coverages

JV games-Coaches indicated as JV coaches (3) coach at the game other coaches run practice- coaches provide support at home games- run the clock, help with equipment etc..
9th grade games- 2 coaches at games, home games and local games other coaches provide support.

Do you have an equipment guy (just something I thought of as a possible need)? Also, do you have someone there to write down and track your play calls (even if it is a booth guy)?

What do you mean with "personel changes", "rotation of athletes", "KO/KOR on the field"? Are these tasks that may interfere with them coaching up their positions during the game (which should be a primary task). I've seen far too many teams where position coaches become fans on Friday night, not coaching their players, even when their position comes off the field.

What exactly are you looking for?

What you have described is basically like how most of the HC's I've work for; to some degree or another. And it worked.

The HC I work for now does the V/JV/9 totally different but we have more coaches (because..... well just because). So we don't have
'Varsity', 'JV', 'Freshman' coaches. We are all 'Varsity' coaches.

We split the team (similar numbers) into an 'A' group and a 'B' group. Now we have fields up the wazoo, so we can have each on their own field....

But the 'A' group is comprised of:
1-varsity starters
2-varsity depth
3-sub-varsity players that need to fill in a 2 deep rosters
4-and this 'A' group does not mean that they you automatically dress on Friday.... so there are swing players

The 'B' group is purely developmental players.... so mainly freshman and the remaining JV. They mostly spend a lot of time in team type periods, but have some Indy and inside periods.

For M/T/W the A/B groups don't change (except for a very few players that rotate), but the coaches rotate. So the 'B' group always have a varsity coach working with that position for the entire day.

The coordinators always stay with the 'A' group and there are certain coaches that have to pull double duty (IE LB coach coach his group, but also act as the opposing team DC in offensive periods so his 'B' day is split between fields..... etc) but the HC can float between the 2 groups based on what period is going on and where he is needed.... also we're a school that the HC doesn't have to be a coordinator.

So far as the sub-varsity games (Thursday JV and freshman) there is no set staff. All coaches rotate between each team group from week to week..... except that the HC will rotate a couple of redundant coaches to an off night from time to time which is nice. And also which coach calls the offense/defense on the sub-varsity games rotates as well. So there is no JV DC/OC/HC for the entire season. Basically it's each and every AC will at some point in time during the season have serve a lead role.

It can seem very confusing, and it took me a whole season to figure out how it works but it does... really well.

9th and 10th grade is a really big deal. It is where all your depth comes from. Your varsity coaches need to oversee it. Oversee meaning the varsity O-line coach is sitting down with the other two and giving the drills, fundies he needs those to have, like getting into a stance, terminology, snapping a football, and that goes for every position…your oc and dc on frosh and jv cannot be left to their own devices. And their is no freedom for coaches at that level. And that goes for every part of those two programs.
And in my not so original thinking, those guys need to be in the building, more so than the varsity guys.
And if you dont work in a 3rd/4th world county, you need to take those parents who are there every day, the parents who watch practice every single day, and put them to work. In my first job, in hind sight, their is nothing that shouldnt been film, varsity, jv, frosh. Weight room, meetings, installs, nothing.
If you have volunteers, and enough of them, have them do hudl input.

And before you lose your mind, its great way to develop coaches, if not for your program, to go somewhere else and be ready to be a varsity coach.

Good questions: equipment is delegated to the DB or WR coach depending on what team is on the field. We have had a back up QB chart O plays but we have not tracked our D calls.

The WR coach listens to play calls and makes sure that the right personnel groups are on the field for the play.

The DL coach rotates the DL- we try to substitute more defensively because we have a high number of 2 way players on the line.

The DB's coach counts up KO/KOR and gives them the return call and Kick direction and type.

how coaches interact with players as they come off the field is a good discussion to have...thank you.

We have only been using this system for a couple of years and any insight into organization that can help is appreciated. I consider all of the coaches to be Varsity coaches...but the freshmen coaches are on a different pay scale and they consider themselves freshmen coaches.
