Curious...what are the rules regarding forfeits? What exactly determines that you must forfeit? Wondering if that is different state to state. In Louisiana last year, I found it interesting that each week there were many covid "cancellations" (not forfeits last year...this year the games are forfeited) BUT once the 2nd round of the playoffs hit, Covid magically disappeared. That is a bit disheartening to tell the truth. The optimist in me wants to believe that is because the better teams did a better job of following protocols.... but the realist in me says that some shadiness was involved.

We had a local team make the state championship game last year playing 2 of the 4 state playoff games due to corona cancellations. So far this year in our district there have been 6 corona cancellations as we enter week 3. I am setting the over under at playing 5 games out of our scheduled 10.

What are the criteria for cancellation/forfeit? No clue. Each school district is different. Team that we were supposed to play last week had one case and shut down. Other teams have just quarantined players and if they had enough to play after that have played. Basically get a call "Hey we are not playing this week."

I've heard most schools around here really aren't forcing students to quarantine if they've been in contact with someone who's positive. They send something home and it's up to the families if they want them to quarantine or not. I don't think there have been any cancellations in our state yet, at least not that I know of.

We lost our first game because we were quarantined. We played our 2nd game, but lost our 3rd game do to the other team being in quarantine.

We just got our covid info today. Last year no penalty. This year if you have enough to play you play. If you don't then you try to play your game through Monday. If not then you forfeit and get a loss. If both can't play no penalty.

If not then you forfeit and get a loss. If both can't play no penalty. I think there are so many different ways this is being handled that I am glad I am not a part of it. Last year in Louisiana I don't know what the criteria was, who made the decisions etc, but I know the games were simple canceled. That resulted in a great deal of cancellations, and it sure seemed like a great deal of the time the team cancelling the game was likely to be the losing team if they played. Also, as I mentioned above it seems extremely odd that many games were cancelled each week, yet once the 2nd round of the playoffs hit (during the December Surge no less) not a single game was cancelled. The LHSAA seemed to notice that too, and this year if your team is the reason for a cancelation it is a forfeit. But without knowing who is making the call, and what the criteria is , it seems like such an easily manipulated or potentially unfair arrangement. For example, the school district in which I work really doesn't seem to care much about child/worker safety. Their primary concern (judging by the policies and directives given) is to keep parental complaints about quarantines down to a minimum. I could see that leading to different outcomes than other districts with different directives.

I don't know what the criteria is for canceling here in NV but our state has said games that are cancelled are ruled as no contests and not forfeits. Not sure how that will work in the post season. And I assume there will be some rumors of funny business by teams "cancelling" instead of losing but like I said I don't know the criteria used.

The one that was supposed to be the "championship" got cancelled because one team had cases. But we never got to see how they would have put teams into the next round.

Plain and simple Covid is ruining high school football. Besides cancellations and quarantines. If a kid calls you up and just says hey coach I dont feel good today I am not gonna be at practice, then you have to tell him not to come. If he gets specific and mentions COVID symptoms then he probably has to be tested before he can return. It makes it hard to hold kids accountable, and it makes it hard to plan and practice when this is happening every day.
Then you add the stupidity of parents and students on top of that......things like I had a stuffy nose and a headache over the weekend, so my mom scheduled me a COVID test at 730 Monday evening. But I felt better Monday morning, so I came to school and practice and didnt tell the coach till after I was tested......

We havent had any sort of team lift, work out now in almost two years. Most of our opponents if not all of them, may have missed a month total. And it shows.

On my youth team (junior high school age) this week we've had one player out because he and his family tested positive. I just got word from our HC canceling practice today because of "CoVID issues".

Not to hijack this thread but I take Covid very seriously. I wear a mask on occasion I sanitize I limit my travel, etc. I got my flu shot and vaccinated, this is part of life for the foreseeable future. Lockdowns are not the answer, we have not had a single instance of outdoor on field transmission. We’ve had 2 positive cases that contracted Covid through their family members. While I strongly advocated for a spring season last year this year it’s purely political

And now our operation is suspended indefinitely because of what our HC fears has been transmission thru our team. I haven't heard from the club president on this, but I would think they've been talking about it privately. Our opener was to have been this Saturday night. I don't know what the other teams of the club are doing. This is in Newton NJ.

I can't even keep up with who is playing who around here anymore. Teams are changing opponents almost hourly as teams have to drop out due to covid issues. 2 weeks ago, 1 team went through scheduling 3 different opponents over the course of 2 days before finally giving up.

Right there with you coach! Now add smoke and air quality to the equation and you have yourself a complete s#!t show! Tried to move our game to this weeks opponent's home...no go....they can't get reff's Tried to move our game to an opened field about 100 miles away.....got the OK for the field....but no reff's available there either. If it's to smoky tomorrow, our covid riddled, pieced together varsity team will miss a game 3 weeks in a row. I wonder how many more kids will bail on us if this happens? Over a month of practice with no carrot is a hard sell.

Games just not being played. Lots of games not being played. The only time anything close to a forfeit will come into play is once you get into determining final conference standings. At least in our conference, there is a minimum number of games that must be played. If you fall before the minimum, your "conference record" will count any game below that minimum as a loss....but not really a forfeit. You did have a team in this area try to force a team to forfeit after a kid got shot at school....but they later claimed they didn't and at least took it back and turned it into a no contest.

We lost our first game because we were quarantined. We played our 2nd game, but lost our 3rd game do to the other team being in quarantine. I can (sorta) understand why you would be handed a loss for being quarantined and unable to play a game but how in the world are you handed a loss for the other team being quarantined and unable to play? Seems both instances should be a no contest.
To me it's crazy the way this covid thing is playing out and though I'm probably considered a right winger by most standards I'm absolutely a believer that it is real and we need to take serious precautions. I've lost 2 friends to it in the last 45 days - both early 50's and both healthy with no underlying conditions. One of them was the father of the varsity QB so that kid has not been allowed to play (contact tracing or whatever they call it). It's strange to me that some get it with only mild symptoms and others really take it on the chin.

I read it as “lost the game” meaning the team did not have an opportunity to play.

A couple of weeks ago there were, I think, 45 games canceled statewide due to Covid. That number has dropped dramatically over the past two weeks. It’s getting a little better in terms of cancellations as cases plateau now, but a coach I worked with a few years ago and two other teachers I knew personally have died from COVID in the last few weeks. They were all in their mid-late 40s. I live in an area with very strong anti-vax sentiments where only like 35% of HS kids are vaccinated.

Each team in the league around my neck of the woods in rural Eastern Virginia have been impacted. Six team league and five teams have had 2 games ppd or ccd while another has had 1. In a neighboring league, there's 1 team that's played just once so far including having this week's game ppd

We fielded 16 guys last Friday; we've had a few injuries as well as kids out with "flu like symptoms" and a few that are Covid positive. We're looking at the similar numbers this Friday night. Right now, schools are cancelling none-conference games or postponing conference games if numbers dictate so.
