anyone have good stories from this off season?...
...I have two more opportunities and as always, find them to be of the "never a dull moment" variety.

best one was last year when we were interviewing assistants we had a guy come to us and tell us how he would run this and do that etc. Sounded real good until the HC asked him one simple question:" What makes you qualified to coach football?"
his answer: "Well, I have beat a lot of people online in NCAA Football 2005."
HC: "Thanks! Bye!"

well Tog- after having some of my time wasted at an interview, I wrote this email to another school that contacted me for an interview just to protect myself from a repeat scenario...the names have been changed to protect the innocent...
Good Morning Mr Jones, I received a call from Sylvia yesterday to set up an interview for the vacant head coaching position. I am very interested in the position and have a couple of questions for you before I drive out to your school.( a 4 hour drive each way) I would like to discuss some of these things with you.... First, I wondered if you had an opportunity to view my detailed program manual and other materials? Have you researched me on the websites at all? I just wanted to be sure that you were familiar with me and my work. Id be most interested in hearing some feedback on what you liked or perhaps disagreed with. I believe a coach must have a plan and I do. Second I wanted to be sure there was a possible phys ed teaching position as I feel its imperative that I teach in the district as the head coach. I suppose it makes no sense to interview for the position if there is no chance of teaching in the district. I would be very interested in knowing who is involved in the selection process as to date I have heard only from Dr. Jackson. It might help me prepare better if I had some clue as to how the decisions are made in your building. And of course I wanted to be sure that the decision wasnt already made and you folks werent just looking for assistants at this time. (I have experienced this before) I had also wanted to know about the current staff, perhaps You are able to tell me how many of the current staff might be interested in staying on board. My plan would be to interview them to be sure they would fit and we would have the proper chemistry to build this program the right way. To me, it starts with good people. I am a very organized and enthusiastic leader who works relentlessly at winning and teaching the kids to love each other and the game. I need to surround myself with similar teachers/mentors. How many of the current staff are in the building? Id love to know what the football budget is and how many paid positions there are going to be for the complete staff, middle school through high school. How many volunteers would I be permitted to obtain? Are you able to share some knowledge about the current relationship between the local youth programs and the high school program? I have the desire to impliment a strength and conditioning period in the day, does something like that already exist at your school? Can you tell me something about the weight room facility and the current program...ie, are any of the assistants currently getting the kids in the wt room?... I am curious as to what the relationship is between yourself (the athletic department) and the boosters. I am interested in hearing your philosophy on boosters. I am a strong believer in the coach NOT being run over by the boosters folks. I wanted to be absolutely certain that I would not be told what kind of offense or defense to run as I think a coach must be able to evaluate his own athletes and make the decision to fit his systems to the kids. Mr Jones, I appreciate the time and effort it takes to find the right candidate. I know that I will not fail you and myself and my staff will build a program that the kids, the school and community will be proud of. I cannot do it alone so I do have questions. Please feel free to contact me to shed the light on some of these issues. I am sure I have more questions. - Steve Calande
Anyhow, it was too funny to drive to an interview several hours away and be informed that they only needed assistants at that time...unreal. And I have had other conversations where my references called in and seemed to be giving the folks new info as if theyd never read my resume. Its mind boggling sometimes.

The guy who interviewed for the same position I got came to his interview dressed in sweat pants and a college t-shirt. His little brother is in my class right now.

does this email really make sense???
I checked with Dr. Jackson and his response was as follows:
There is no guarantee of a teaching position, although there could be if he would be the best teaching applicant and if there is a position open in the area he is certified in.
I don't know if there will be a position open. What is your area of certification?
Thanks.
Sylvia
* I checked the web site and there are no teaching jobs open....this stuff kills me.

So here is my question...first, let me say this, one AD told me when it comes to applying for jobs "keep it simple"...then he proceeded to tell me "seems to me its always a foregone conclusion". Id be interested in hearing from you head coaches out there...are you willing to share if you felt as though the job was yours before the interview process begun... I interviewed at one school and went and told another candidate that I thought my interview went well...he said to me "Thats good, I have the job, Ill hire you". At another job, i was exploring the building and looking into the facilities. I introduced myself as an applicant to a hold over assistant coach and he looked at me and said "well coach, our new head coach will be coach so and so, hes right over there"(pointing to a coach in the wt room)...so interviews hadnt even started...too funny.

good luck, Calande.
Looks like you're putting it all on the table. Anymore, I doubt HC football in HS has very LITTLE to do with 'qualifications' and more on (administrative) convenience.

"I am sorry, but posting yours and other private e-mails on a message board is so unprofessional. We all have been through the process and unfortunately that's life.
kw"
Thanks for your opinion Kw, The emails have been edited and the names have been changed so no harm done to anyone. No schools were named, no adminstrators...and frankly, as always you have nothing to offer this conversation but bitterness....so please just stay out of it. If you have something of use to offer please find a way to be less condescending. It really has become tiresome and boring. The rest of us lowly assistants will actually learn something about the interview process. Thurman, yes. I do.

See the little quote thing at the top right of a basic reply by someone? makes it a little easier 1. for you to do 2. for others to follow

BTW, I pretty much agree with KW Only in the fact that your name on here is YOUR NAME. Might not be a good idea to have these emails out, names changed or not, as the people involved can easily look you up on the internet and see you talking mess about them.
Future prospective employers can see you doing this too, and wonder "is everything we tell this person going to end up on the internet?"
Just some freindly advice man. Take it how you want.

Hey T- I would agree that it would be foolish if I had used real school names and people and stuff. I also dont think I said anything bad about anyone here did I? That wouldnt be cool at all. The point of this was just to share some of what goes on in the interview process. I thought itd be a learn/learn situation for some. You and Kw spend too much time worrying about me. Its very sweet of you! As I said before, thanks for your concern big guy.

My point in agreement with his was this, If your name on here was coachblahblahblah, then like you say, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Since you use your real name, posting emails, names changed or not, of people that you are interveiwing for HC jobs with is probably not wise. Possible future employers can read this kind of thing from you and look upon you as being someone that is not to be trusted. I have read other things like this from you on other boards, and it is kind of shocking to say the least. You can go ahead and do what you want. I was just making the point to others out there that it might not be the best decision.

I was asking because i didnt want to make a mistake. If you think its poor taste or poor judgement to share bits of these experiences I will delete them, but is it possible to delete the whole thread? its not that i disagree with either of you ...as i said, if i posted real schools and real names yes,...itd be nutty.

Calande is simply telling his experiences. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. In fact, he is MAN enough about it to do so with his name. Is it the wisest thing from his point of view??? Probably not, but that is his choice.
If you stop to think about it, he probably isn't hurting himself too much because just from reading his posts, I do not think he would enjoy working in those schools anway.
I am glad that he is posting things like this. As a former collegiate coach, and then someone in the corporate world, I am experiencing similar frustration in trying to get a teaching/coaching job. Responding to job postings, and then being told that the person you were told to reply to is not the right person... being told that there is an IMMEDIATE NEED, and then that the position will probably be filled with a long term sub... etc. It gives me insight into what I could be facing as I make this next career move.

my old school hired a basketball coach from out of state. Had tons if issues with the guy. They did a search on the net and found 2 newspaper articles on the guy that were serious red flags. The AD told me they would always do more research than just a few phone calls to the school and a few of his references. Most schools if they want to get rid of you bad enough will tell the admin anything they want to hear to help you out the door when a school admin. calls to check out credetials.

I am not sure I would look online at chat boards to hire a coach...but that's just me. why wouldn't they look online? don't you use the net to gather information? aren't WE looking online for information regarding football? it isn't too farfetched to think that an AD or a member of a hiring committee might look online to see the latest info and who is being talked about..
