I know some games in Southwest Virginia have been rescheduled due to the lack of officials.

We are too. As of right now, we'll only have four out of eight games on a Friday because we can't find refs.

Any other job get more scrutiny than an official? Your LG can screw up 75 times on Friday, but line-judge misses 1 holding call and 1000 people let them hear about that 1 mistake for the rest of the night.
Same with the "robo-ump" idea in baseball... really a better alternative than grown men having to figure out the zone is a little bigger on outside half tonight?
Only dudes on the field with more experts who know better than the HC on either side are the referees. Wish all the screamers in the stands that love football would put their asses through the requirements and figure out it sucks and you don't get paid much.
I think this topic is eerily similar to the ones we are having about coaches just leaving in bunches... no football with covid kinda wasn't that bad for a lot of guys and they asked, "why go back to the stress for 2k a year?"

We will lose the game if we lose officials. It’s terrifying.
Everyone needs to chip-in in communities to address shortages.
My 5am proposal is this:
State Associations need to incentivize the recruitment and retainment of quality officials. This should happen on a monetary front and an educational front. I think the state should offer a season bonus for officials who work a certain number of games. I don’t know the number but something significant. I also think the state clinics should have a real talk session to let officials vent and give their perspective. It should be mandatory for coaches and it should not be some BS slideshow to check a box. Officials need more of a paycheck and more of a voice.
I think schools need to pay more for the games at all levels. And I think it should be 2x-3x. It will be a burden on schools but without officials it won’t matter because we can’t play anyway. I also think there should be a debriefing meeting between each head coach (individually) and the head official each week. A five to ten minute session to get back on the same page. Again this is a burden on both sides but we need real change to protect the game.
Finally we need to protect officials from nonsense from arrival to departure. Fans, coaches and players should not be allowed to demean a grown man just because he made a mistake and wears a funny shirt. People who cannot respect the officials cannot attend the game. Removal should emphasized and executed by a school administrator.
I used to say when I was a head coach the only thing I hate more than officials was communists and snakes. And I was the biggest assshole of all to these guys and I was wrong.
We can’t play without officials, period. This issue is dire and we as a profession need to find a solution.

We have had some games moved to Thrs and Sat this year due to lack of officials in the area. Not sure it's NFHS or our state but they have implemented a rule that basically says from the time the refs step foot on the property till the time they leave they are protected and any player coach or fan who confronts them or harasses them can be punished by a two game suspension. Sadly like those stupid warning labels on bleach and stuff that say "do not drink" they had to put this in place for a reason

Illinois has been sliding into a severe shortage for the past 10ish years. It's gotten real bad the past 5. Wrestling is especially short.
If I ever get to day shift, I've contemplated at least trying to be a wrestling ref.

Numbers of officials in MI have been steadily declining. Only going to get worse as Boomers retire and fewer young people get in.
State association has been actively recruiting including asking schools to teach techniques-rules in PE to encourage HS students to get involved.

I don't know if every conference in Iowa does baseball this way, but if school A is playing school B the JV double header will be at school A and the varsity double header will be at school B. Our conference had several JV double headers cancelled or postponed this year because there weren't enough umpires to fill the number of varsity and JV games being played on the same day. Football-wise, the issue doesn't seem as bad, but we're getting there...

Solution….coaches out of season ref for other sports 🤯 This is an idea I've been trying to get rolling in our state. We coaches have the greatest resource at our finger tips to make sure that we have plenty of quality officials.... our athletes. In SC if every high school staff was able to get 2 of our graduating seniors to become referees and only 1/2 of those former athletes stuck to officiating, then our shortage would be a surplus in just a few years.

It's so bad that they have had to move multiple games to Thursday nights just to be able to use the officials again on Friday nights.
Many of our local guys say they travel half way across the state to officiate now as well.

We have had games moved and most crews are now just four man crews.

Solution….coaches out of season ref for other sports 🤯 BITD when teachers were making $6k/a year and coaching pay was in low hundreds guys would coach two-three sports and officiate when they weren't to make extra money (as well as working summers). One of my college coaches-mentors started off as a HS coach in Detroit. The city did not have lights on their fields so he and others would coach their games in the afternoon, then drive out to the burbs and referee at night. Nowadays teacher-coaches don't need the money as desperately and certainly not the aggravation.

I get the NFHS emails all the time and I've considered doing it but then I think of some of the absolute prigs that I've seen abusing officials and I dismiss the idea.

Oh I need the money but I would probably cold {censored} someone. Dealing with middle schoolers all day in class then coaching, then going home to 3 teenage girls and a wife that doesn't really like me, I think I'm on a thin line. I use to ref 5 and 6th grade basketball on Saturdays when I was single.

One of the other problems is if you are in an area that is growing is more schools are being built right at the same time that officials are quitting/retiring. Even if all the problems listed above weren't happening (and they are, I know) it would still be a problem just on the Math. I would also say that its tougher for people to get off work and get to football games in time due to the increased traffic in Metropolitan areas and even some rural areas(2 lane roads). Add these natural occurrences to the rest and its no surprise its such a problem.
