Yes, I have heard, second hand mind you, that some football coaches at D3 schools get extra $$ if more than a certain number of freshman enroll to play football. I would be shocked if roster size was not one of the routine things on which D3 football coaches are evaluated. Which really is bolstered by the "blessed to receive" trend the last several years. I have nothing against lower levels of athletics, be it NCAA D3 or NAIA. My issue is the almost predatory nature of some of the recruiting efforts, and the fact that quite frankly, it probably isn't in many of the kids best interests to attend some of those schools.

My son plays for Montana Tech in the Frontier conference. I went to my first game ever last night in Butte. The football is good. Fun game to watch between Eastern Oregon and Tech. My son is one of the 3 players from CA on the roster. He loves Butte. I'm actually typing this while waiting for my flight home from Butte.
Anyway, both of my son's were recruited pretty good by D3s. Both had good grades, but going to D3s would have cost me a kidney each year. My son's tuition at Tech is extremely manageable especially with the WUE. He also has about a 20% scholarship.
It's working out good so far...except for that hiccup last year.
Differences? Roster numbers? Most likely. Ability to give scholarships (NAIA). Not really sure. Football seems comparable within the programs my sons were recruited by.

I think that this is probably a pretty good assessment, I think at the very least the football programs likely receive some sort of extra funding for team numbers. I am currently a senior at a D3 school and was on the team my freshman year. I was in the group of players that wouldn't have really ever had a chance to play, so I decided to go ahead and get into coaching. I think we had 122 players for camp my freshman year with a huge freshman class. Fortunately things have worked out for me as I probably would've gone to school here anyway (local). It is sad to see how many I came in with that once football was over for them have walked away from school all together as it seemed that football was likely their only reason for coming to the school at all.

Retention is clearly not a priority at many D3 schools as there is a huge amount of turnover. As long as the HFC hits the roster number, it doesn't matter who the kids are.

No, because they are selling pipedreams which don't last very long.
