So, I coach a HS Football team. One of my players shows great potential on the field, but he keeps disrupting practice when he farts. He farts several times per practice, and has also stunk up the locker room on multiple occasions. I've tried reprimanding him, making him do extra pushups, sprints, etc., and even told his parents about the situation. But, no matter the approach I try, it goes through one of his ears and out of the other. The other boys don't even laugh anymore when he farts, they're mortified.
How do I stop this excessive farting behavior?

Tell him "Your voice has changed but your breath is the same."

I had a athlete that had some intestinal problems. His farts could drop a horse. I had him sit in the hall when he felt a episode come on. In sports he was able to move so he could go off and take care of business. The thing here is he doesn't care. If it interrupts practice that bad and he won't change then he needs to be away from the squad. Make him a filmer. I would put him in the press box with the opposite team. Always talk with administration and ask for help or counselor. I can't believe parents are not going to try and help. That stinks.

FIRST- Make sure he doesnt have any sort of medical condition where they could argue it leads to him having gas. Otherwise you are punishing his condition, and that is a no-no nowadays (once something has been diagnosed you have to accept it).
Then I would lay off the punishment drills and just call him out and kick him out. Next time he pulls that, get your most serious grown man face and bluntly ask him, "man what the hell's wrong with you? You pull that 5th grade nonsense on my team? We got grown men in here, you take that childish nonsense out" Then have him leave the building/drill/whatever; and you let everyone else know that if they want to giggle or act the fool they can leave too.
Once he's out and away from the situation, have a coach let him know he isnt welcome on the time if he is going to be disruptive. Balls in his court.

Used to work with a PE teacher/basketball coach who had irritable bowel syndrome. When he was having a rough day, he would let us know first thing in the morning and we would all steer clear of the coaches office.

I have far worse gas when I eat cleaner than I do when it's bad for me. I have never smelled worse than when I weighed 255 and was clean eating.

Forget punishment conditioning for breaking rules, this kid gets it for farming.
Ponder that for a minute...

Does anyone else think that this might be a troll? I have no evidence, but there is a small party of me that thinks something "stinks".....pun intended.

I have talked to his parents further about the situation since I posted this thread. He does not have any known particular gastrointestinal issues or other conditions. I think he purposely eats high-carbs so that he can disrupt practice at will.

And there you go, he is continually being disruptive to the learning environment and the ability for others to grow and preform at their best, to me thats cause for being removed.

When I was coaching JV the center started shotgunning Fiber One brownies and eating copious amounts of Kashi cereal for the express purpose of farting on the QB's hands. He was exactly the kid that you would imagine would think something like that up. I'll admit that at first it was funny and I had a difficult time hiding my reaction but it quickly became a distraction. After awhile I told the kid he was going to lose his spot and he stopped, though he would throw a day in about every two weeks and then just go, "Coach, I can't help it, I suffer from occasional stomach upset". He was a complete moron and I loved him.

OK, I'm having a problem with the idea of throwing a kid off of the team for farting. We've had a guy or two with that problem and, if it's really bad, we moved the drill. I'm also trying to picture that phone call, "Mr. Jones, why does Johnny fart so much?'. None of this makes sense to me.

That could be true, or they could all be gassy in that family so nobody notices.

Maybe I am reading this differently, but I assumed he meant the kid is doing it intentionally just to be disruptive. In the middle of meetings, in the huddle, before a play, etc. Just to get a rise, get some attention and be disruptive (which some people enjoy doing).
