Our district did not play football last year (2020 season). Many of our kids have not played since fall of 2019.
After a long lay off, what do you feel like kids will need to work the most to get back to a playable skill level?
From what we have seen so far, there's a noticeable drop off in basic generic athletic skill and coordination plus obviously cardio is way down, but hunger and "want to be out there" seems way up.
Thoughts?

Weight and speed training in conjunction with an equal amount of time on the field doing basic offense and defense.
They gotta jump back into the pool.

While we had an abbreviated Spring season this year, my observation as a retired teacher, back coaching, was the impact of how remote learning has affected the kids listening abilities when they returned to in person learning out on the field.
There was a decided lack of focus and the kids had to be constantly redirected, above and beyond what one would normally expect from a group of teenagers. This was especially obvious with our incoming 9th graders, who didn't have a previous experience to know what to expect.

Remote learning killed us too. This would have been our culmination of 3 previous years of good progress at the school I'm at now. I'm also a retired teacher. Seniors this season, a great group as sophs, are no shows all summer and maybe no shows at all. Weight room is lucky if we have 12 kids each day. Feels like 1st year here again. I believe we'll have 6 9ths and 10ths starting each way on varsity with no JV. We'll still coach our @sses off.

Every county has been lifting since last summer. We not so much.
