Coaches, what do your film sessions look like when you sit down to look at the last game? Also, what do they look like when you are preparing for your next opponent? I’m hoping to get some new ideas to be more efficient during film sessions.

Coaches have already gone thru every play on HUDL before the team film session and have the spot shadows and text boxes filled out on plays (good and bad). We quickly talk thru what happened (good or bad) and how to fix it, then move to next play. Recently, we have not shown much if any HUDL film of our upcoming opponents to our team. Instead we have play cards/practice scripts of our opponent's schemes and run them in scout defense/offense.

I’m hoping to get some new ideas to be more efficient during film sessions. Primarily, from last game: Emphasis on where we need to improve--but also a kind of "best plays" as well so it's not just a "here's you screwing up" session. For opponent: Defensively, focus on their top 5 plays. Anything different they do. Offensively, how they line up to various formations.

For those of you just showing a few plays of each concept or not going through the game how are you teaching situational football?

For those of you just showing a few plays of each concept or not going through the game how are you teaching situational football? We do that in our weekly practice routine and scripts. We have periods for 2 point plays, short yardage, drive starters, our Tuesday is devoted to 3rd down situations, etc...

We have a hard cap of 1 hour with the kids. Sometimes that's enough to get thru the 1st quarter, sometimes more. If there is something specific we need kids to see from further in the game, those are already flagged and we go over them first.
We tell the kids our primary focus will be what we need to do better... if we see something done EXTREMELY well we will point it out, but we are looking to fix mistakes. The goal is winning games and knowing how we can improve to win in the future.
We also give kids grading sheets and they grade themselves on each play they are in for the varsity game. Forces them to actually watch themselves and be critical.
