They were debating this on a local sports radio station today and while I’m not looking for serious discussion thought this would be fun.
Which do you call it and where are you? In Michigan everywhere I’ve coached they’ve been down ups. When I was in NC they were up downs.
What do you call them and where are you?

Illinois and Iowa. Up downs. Your post is the first time I've ever heard them referred to as down ups, although that may make more sense!

Up downs makes sense because you start up and go down. Down up makes sense because you’re going down and getting up. That’s why I said it isn’t a serious topic but I was curious. I think when I was in Utah they were up downs as well.

If you start down then get up, its down up. But what if you screw while up? If you start up and go down, up down. But if you screw while you are and it up down, then it is really a down up? Semantic though.

Have never heard "Down Ups", always "Up Downs" although "Down Ups" certainly makes more sense. But sounds weird. Doesn't roll off the tongue like "Up Downs".
How about burpees? I never heard burpees referred to as "squat thrusts" until I went into the Army.

In California
I've always called them Up-Downs, even though we start on our feet, then go down and back up.

I actually made it into my coaching career without knowing what a Burpee was. Was never forced to them as a high school or college player...

In KY up downs, grass drills, and I’ve heard Green Bays also. Most of time it was just “get’em choppin followed by a whistle/hit it” and no title was given. If it was in a drill like pursuit then it was do an up down then whatever.

The only time I ever heard burpees called “squat thrusts” was on Beavis and Butthead where their gym teacher made them do them. That was the first time I ever saw a burpee as a kid so I remembered that name.

Alabama
up downs.
Had a coach tell me 15 years ago tell me that they should be called "down ups". Told him he was right. But still call them up downs.
My old coach used to all them grass drills.
I tell my team it is about to be up down Thursday (or whatever day it is).

Up downs.
And a nice 5 up down refresher on the snap count after you false start in practice is always a good time.

I just tell them they’re about to bounce. But if I’m using the kings English it’s up downs. If you say down ups you’re a communist

Might be the only universal terminology in our game.

Agree with all the above... up/downs... We've all done them and made kids do them.
What follows? Is there any coaching (correction) or is it just time to yell?
How do you use them to coach the game of football?

How do you use them to coach the game of football? I don't think I ever explained more than once a season why we did 5 after a false start. Heck, usually the kids started chopping them before I said anything. I just usually blew a whistle.

How do you use them to coach the game of football? I don’t like using them much and pretty much only ever resort to them if a kid is screwing up in the same way over and over and not taking coaching. I just use them to get the kid’s attention. IMO, they can very quickly turn kids off football or just waste a lot of time if you use them excessively. I’ve coached under a guy who would make the entire team do them for a false start in practice, which seemed counter/intuitive—especially for the defenders who did their jobs properly and led to a lot of wasted time. I think we got more up-downs done in team than actual reps. I once coached with a guy who’d make his entire position group do them EXCEPT the offender, who had to stand there feeling like a jackass while everyone else did them and called out his name with each rep. That was pretty effective on eliminating mistakes, actually.

We had an old school coach who would say...
"Coach, time to get them up and down!"
"Get'em chopping!!"
