Question for those with experience. Our school is once again scheduling team photos from 3:30 - 4:10 on a Tuesday during game week. School lets out at 2:50 and off campus sports get precedent on earlier time slot.
We meet and practice from 3:30 - 6:00 PM.
Does this or something similar happen to you?

Coached Track & Football for something like 25 combined seasons, I've never had team photos at any time that wasn't practice time. Try to reschedule it during the bye week if you can?

Golf, swimming, tennis, bowling? (assuming no golf course, swimming pool, or tennis courts or bowling alley on your campus?) Our team photos were always during preseason practice, but admittedly in the "olden days" school started later and there were two weeks of full practice before school even started. Now school is starting just a few days after the first date practice can begin.

Can they be moved to pre season camp? We always seem to have ours during our first official week during doubles so they are at school all day already.

It sounds like for some reason the entire athletic program takes pictures on this day? Or maybe just the entire fall sports group? Doesn't sound like it is just a football picture set up.

We had a "Meet Your Team Day" Saturday morning first week of practice that included team and individual pictures, intrasquad scrimmages, and picnic. Anybody who wanted-needed photos could get them then or not at all. We publicized date and time well in advance so was not a problem. Besides everywhere I was HC AD wanted team pictures for game programs, and MYT Day was less than two weeks before opener.

We practice right after in game gear. If it's a problem start practice after pictures.

Reschedule if possible until the first set of grades come out. They won't take as long. I agree with freezeoption, just practice after in game gear. You may have to modify your times a little bit but it can work. Be aware it will be a crappy practice because the kids get goofy on picture day. Just try to roll with it and move on.

I couldn't care less about when pictures are. They suck no matter what day or time they schedule them
I hate them second only behind anything homecoming

best picture day ever the camera guy did mug shots on a green screen and the company photoshopped everyone into a group photo.

Pictures have always been during practice at every school I've coached at. If we don't win a game because we lost that half hour of practice, then we should look at how we practice.

that is an admin that shouldn't be admin, and don't care about athletics We were just debating this the other day in our office. Too many admin think support is wearing their free team shirt to the game on Friday and smiling at you in the hallway during the week. Support is a lot more than cheering on the team.

Pictures in all of the schools that I have worked at in the South have picture taking like I wouldn’t believe. In the north it was always. Quick team picture, if you want individual pictures get in that line and if not get changed and let’s go. In the South…team picture in gym, team picture in bleachers, players individual pictures, player pictures with family, coaches picture for family, position group pictures, staff picture, grade level group picture, football + cheerleading, senior football + senior football, and finally all fall sports at once in the bleachers. Plus or minus a pose or two depending on local preference. It’s nonsense. I’ve been married 18 years and my wife has only suckered into three formal family pictures.

I have never understood the coaches families pictures in HS. Now when the colleges use to send out the big media guides it was always nice to check out any hot wives in the family pictures but anyways....

Sounds like practice starts at 4:15 and goes until about 7. You're asking parents to make an adjustment 1 day out of the year. Stress to them the importance of practice and the issue that pictures had to be taken that day but the sacrifice we're all making to accommodate that schedule to is practice 45 to 60 minutes later that one day.

Every year, we have a fall sports picture day. Every year, the coaches bitch and complain about it. 24 hours later, no one remembers it. 12 months later, the exact same thing happens. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Why doesn't the HC schedule pictures? It was explained to me, many years ago, that it was simply much more convenient for the picture company, the boosters, and the yearbook club to do all fall sports/activities the same day.

Lather, rinse, repeat. We have the exact same phenomenon regarding a "red ribbon week" (elementary school). Every year without fail, discipline issues, uniform code issues etc. etc. Rabble Rabble."why are we doing this!!!" and then without fail each fall some committee starts brainstorming how many "crazy sock day" like ideas they can squeeze in a week.

Its happened, it is what it is. Throw your game jersey over your practice jersey for individuals and team photo and plan on going a little later. Its a pain in the @ss but pick your battles.

When picture day is on a practice day it always seems to make that practice completely useless, the kids are unfocused. I was in a program where the HC did it on a Saturday two weeks before the first game and then had a bbq after. The grandmother of one of the players made the best collard greens I ever had. There were some fun games for the kids and there was a flag game between the players and the dads & coaches (that wanted to participate). It was a good day to meet families and build community within the program.

This isn't short notice so I'd adjust accordingly. But, I won't die on the "Team Photo" mountain unless I have to (i.e. short/no notice). I have no issue adjusting, given proper notice. If not, the "lack of preparation on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on mine" clause applies.

I didn’t know they did all that in the south. That’s crazy. We usually take pictures at the end of practice where I’m at now. We take the team picture first and the assistants all leave. The head coach stays until individual pictures are finished. I’d say we lose maybe 30-45 minutes of practice. It’s in the first two weeks so we’re not preparing for a game yet.

Stuff like this....or making coaches attend things during practice times (faculty meetings, open house, whatever.....) is the stuff you change jobs over. They are telling you they don't get it and they don't care.
