Quick question.......looking for some good points
Do you like to set up practice running ALL defense one day and ALL offense on the other with the third being a combination?
Or do you like to do the traditional practice format of Defense and Offense every day?
I have never taken part in (HS) or coached in a system that does ALL offense or defense in one day. Love to get your input and thoughts. Thanks

The dumb thing for me, is that we and every team I have ever been/coached on has been ALL D or ALL O each day. Only late in the season do we switch to some of each each day.

I like to practice both O and D each day. Monday is more O, Tuesday is more D and Wednesday is equal with both O/D focusing more on team. Thursday is Spec T and review.

We do all offense on Tuesday (except for a 10 minute tackling period) and all defense of Wednesday (except for 10 minutes of team offense "rapid reps"). I love it this way. It allows us to get good in-depth work. It also prevents a situation where an offensive-minded HC squeezes the defense out of practice time.

We do everything everyday. We start practice with warm ups and special teams, which gives us some more time for our walk on coaches to get there. Then we start with Varsity Offense and JV Defense. Everyone in our programe from 10th up practice together. We are a 2 platoon team and a 1 platoon staff. So our Defensive staff works with the JV players on D while the varsity is on Offense and vice versa in the second 1/2 of practice. If the Varsity coaches need a look from the JV players then we will help service them. Our JV players have become much better and don't take as long as Juniors to develop at the Varsity level. We go about 20 min of ST. and 1:15 of each O and D .

Aztec,
Does your JV team have a designated HC? We do the same format- to the T. Our JV team has a designated HC, but he only coaches the O-side, so when it is defensive time, there is no HC on the field. I have been with the program for about a couple years and the thing I do not like about our set-up is that the kids can feel (and I can sense) that they have no TRUE HC. Almost like step children to the program. When I played HS, we had a seperate staff for JV and Varsity. However, when we played JV, we had a great sense of pride and we knew who our HC was, we had someone who we trusted and who we were disciplined by. We bonded together for two years and we had great leadership for varsity. My current program lacks this type of bondage. We also have a freshman program with a specific staff, so they have a different staff at 9th and 10th and then varsity.
What are your thoughts and how would you remedy this? Thanks

I think the main point of JV is teaching plays. While we all want to win. The most important thing is at the end of the season is did the JV team learn the base offense? And can this be done with or without a HC?

whip,
I completely see your point, and winning is not and will not be my concern. IMO, you could learn the plays like robots, however, if you do not have a cohesive team, I feel that it is just as destructive. It is something we are working on during the offseason, however, I think it could be more productive for that cohesion to begin earlier in their HS career. Execution was not a factor, leadership and pride was. Thanks for your insight!

We work both Defense and offense. We coach an offensive and defensive position. All kids work defense and then we switch to offense. It has worked out great for us and you can get your best kids on the field on both sides of the ball.

We do have a JV HC and a DC. Our JV's get on the field at 2:05 while the varsity players are lifting. they practice for 35 min as a JV only group 3 days a week. One day O, one day D, and one day Kick. The kids all know who the JV HC is and respect him. They also know the Varsity HC is watching them every day as scout guys. We have a sponsorship with the local Dominos Pizza and they give us free pizzas every week. We award the varsity players of the week and the JV scout player of the week. We get a very good look because guys want to get that pizza. Seems dumb but kids will do just about anything for food. We keep it up during the off season and award 2-3 guys a week pizza coupons for good effort, leadership, etc.......

We practice with everyone together 140 players 9th thru 12th grade.
We have 8 paid coaches and 5 volunteer coaches.
We as coaches only coach one side on the ball O or D. Had coach is our special teams coach.
We 15 minutes of special teams at the beginning of practice then 45 of Varsity Offense followed by 45 minutes of Varisty Defense.
When Varsity Offense is practicing on one field the young (9th-10th grade) Defense is practice on the other field with the defensive staff.
Then we switch.
Our JV team is made up of second team varisty players and sophomores. Who ever doesn't start or play alot Friday night will play JV Monday. They get there work in running second team varsity or first team young team O or D.
The 9th gtraders get better because they are being coached by the varsity coaches and competeing vs. an older group of 10th graders.

Our practice is designed the way Azterc described, just not as long. We spend 55 minutres with each group and include special teams in that time. We do designate a HC for the JV and the Freshmen, but that is mostly for administrative purposes. Since our defensive/offensive times are set for the year, the HC cannot control how much time is spent on offense or defense. Each side gets 55 minutes. The same actually with the varsity. 55 minutes of offense and 55 minutes of defense. I am the football DC, but I let the JV DC design his own practice schedule, base on things they may need to concentrate on. It works well for us.
