Saw this topic touched on in another thread and didn't want to hijack so Ill bring it up here. If you get hired on as a HC at a school, and were previously a coordinator or position coach at a different school, what is the accepted rules and protocol for taking coaches with you from your current school to new one?
I had heard some coaches say that you can take one guy with you, which seems a fair way to not hurt the program you were at while still allowing coaches to progress in their career and help you build at your new place. But what are thoughts on this?

But what are thoughts on this? I would say you should be able to take any that want to go if it is a better situation for them. Realistically, in most cases how many will that be? How many will be able to secure teaching spots? How many would be going into better coaching situations than they already are, OR than they will be if others leave the program with you?

In reality 1-2 may be able to improve their situations. Trying to gut the entire staff would be a poor move. Overall you should be upfront with the HC. Would never want to do anything I wouldn’t want done to me.

That is true, I guess I shouldve clarified that in this hypothetical the HC from the previous school was very supportive of you and helped you get the HC job. So a friend, mentor, supporter, etc.

So a friend, mentor, supporter, etc. if he is a real football coach he wants everyone on staff to move forward if anyone on staff wants to move up to a coordinator job with you as you move---he should understand if not---you didn't want to work for him anyhow take who is willing and able and who you want to your new gig much better than hiring willy nilly based off "this guy graduated from that school" or "he is an expert on the facemelter' dipshits from some other school

Preface: Assuming the new HC can take who he wants...
Maybe some guys would take a lateral move and go with this hypothetical new HC because they think he would be better to work for in a variety of ways.
Maybe the new HC is offering a promotion?
Maybe the new HC has better connections that will benefit the AC down the road?
Maybe the new HC has better balance and gives the staff more time off/wastes less time?
Maybe the new HC has really good knowledge and the AC can benefit from sitting under the learning tree of a guy who is finally in charge?
Maybe the old HC was a dipsht and the AC wants out?
I have contemplated leaving various situations for all of these reasons at one point or another. Didn't do it every time, but all of these reasons have played a role in whether or not I leave/left or stayed put.

Are you really going to sell two homes, relocate two families? And in 6-8 mo. at best?

Well since you're talking about grown men with the ability to do what they want... if you offer someone a spot and they take it oh well. There is no rule. No coach is anyone property like on the way out the HC says choose one...

I would think any amount is fine as long as they are getting a promotion of some sort.
If you take the QB coach from the old school and he becomes your OC then that makes sense why he would want to leave and the HC at the old school should recognize that.
But if you take that QB coach and hire him to be your QB coach it better have some other circumstances around the hire (he lives closer to the new school/he already works at the new school/etc)

If a guy left our staff for a lateral move across the board, I’d question myself not be mad at the coach taking them

Then maybe the coach decides not to take the position.... ? You can’t wait till July to decide oops it’s not gonna work as assistant. To me the question isn’t really a question unless there’s a bond.. Have seen the bond thing. If I take a job, 75 mi. away, I can’t ask assistant to make that sacrifice... unless...

I've been on several sides of this. I'd say the common denominator is having fairly open communication with the coach at the other school if you have a good relationship with them. Sometimes several guys are interested in leaving, sometimes none are. Teaching jobs make a huge difference, and football promotions do as well.
If you don't get along withe HC at the job you're leaving from then I'd guess you probably also don't care about poaching assistants.

As the last several posts have detailed, I would think the first step would be to ask the staff member you want to join you if he's interested. If he's not, you know to move on and you've probably already avoided any drama, if there would have been any to begin with. Then, if he's interested and if you KNOW you can get him hired at your new school, you tell the current HC ASAP not so much as a control thing, but as professional courtesy so he can then start trying to find a replacement.

And if they have no desire, if they aren't wanting and willing to move they just say "no". You dont have to ask...you know..... you spend the time we do... you know the individual. Example. One guy has the hc job in an adjacent county when he wants it. Y? Father is loaded. Big wig. Real pull. Another coach is University grad with ties to university. Another has girls in Hs. And closer to retirement another one isnt going podunk. Another is an area lifer who is never getting a degree. All that, then all the shooting of crap? I know without asking. how many would I ask if I didn’t know any of that? One This is true on staffs I suspect. moving within area is different and more than doable.

Well I guess I'm not Carnac the Magnificent, so I would ask so that I could have a definite answer. That way both parties don't have to wonder.

There is especially nothing wrong with it if you are offering someone greater responsibility/chance to move up, etc. You're going to take coaches off someone's staff after all. Don't be sneaky about it--be up front.
