Anybody go 7 pad girdle and shorts instead of practice pants? We don't do much full contact, but planned on doing the small amount in the 7 pad girdle and shorts. Figured it may save our kids legs some. Anybody else do something similar?

I haven’t used practice pants in probably 10 years. There have been a few years we used volleyball knee pads for practice. If you need protection pull them up.

I've been seeing more and more teams have kids with basketball knee pad sleeves. Anybody use those for games? Thanks!

I never had a clue and neither did the officials because you could clearly see a “knee pad”

There are much better ways to accomplish that. Now if you're looking to save costs, having to issue 1 less item, etc..; then...

I haven't read the rest of the thread, but my guess is if they just use girdles/shorts, the tempo won't be full contact. If they wear pants, the tempo will be full contact. That would save their legs.

No practice pants for us. Some of our kids wear 7 pad and some 5 pad with slip ins for knees. We’ve been doing it for years. Our kids, especially the linemen, love it.

To each his own and if something works for you fine. I prefer practice pants for two reasons:
1. If a kid gets injured in shorts during a padded practice you may have a hard time explaining yourself. 2. They have to wear pants and pads in games so they might as well get used to them. That's what practice is for.

Coach, could you help me understand what "slip ins for knees" would be. A picture or a link to something would be helpful. We've got a bunch of 5 pad girdles already in use and would be interested in a cheap option to get the knees covered without wearing practice pants. Thanks.

Again, not trying to be obtuse; when you say '7 pad girdle' what is that? Would that be 2 thighs, 2 knees, 2 hips, and a butt pad?

5 pad girdle, volleyball knee pads (down unless live or team thud so as to not bang knees) and shorts since 2007. Less laundry and with knee pads down for majority of practice, the kids just feel lighter and faster....maybe all psychological but aren't we always looking for a psychological edge??

Agree we have done the same thing for 10 years now with no issues. I'd make an argument that pullup knee pads are safer than knee pads in practice pants because usually those practice pants have ripped out bottoms that make the knee pads move everywhere.
