Anyone send out a letter to local businesses in terms of donations, advertising, whatever, in other words, getting money out of them? I'm about to take over a program and would like to reach out to the community for support.
I'd appreciate any letters that you guys send out that you could send my way.

The HC personally went to the business and made enough to buy new pants this year. I think all the ones he went to were friends of friends that owned the place, but I think it would be best to physically go into the business, have answers ready for questions they might have like where is my money going, where would my advertisement be placed, how much, and maybe even have a print out of the football tradition at your new school, how community involvement really benefits the kids. Just some thoughts

it is good to go in person, but most want something in writing of what your asking for and where money is going and you need to have it on a letterhead from your school.
Also make sure you have a tax ID number ready for them so they can write off their donation.

Just some thoughts I agree--especially if you are the new head coach. A letter is easy to throw away but a personal visit at least forces them to face the issue. Plus, they may not be able to donate a monetary amount but may be able to help you out in other ways. I would not approach it as a "I need money--give, give, give." Try to establish a bond between your program and the community businesses--maybe putting their advertisement in the program, laminating signs at your gate, including them on the team website, etc.

Well, my plan was to send out a letter before I went place to place. That way they would already have an idea and I wouldn't be walking in cold having to explain the same thing over and over however many times.

You could do what I did when I was in sales and that is send the letter out wait about a week then call those companies to make sure they got the letter and set up a time to sit down with them.
