For any of you "small school" guys....have you ever coached both middle and high school level football the same year? We are striking out finding quality guys to coach and will probably be short handed.
If so, I would be very curious to hear how that worked out, what schedule you used, how you formatted practice, any tips for success etc.

Not at this school any more, but we did jr high and HS Indy together and group and split at team. I had 4 coaches including me. When we split sent two with jr high.

I was at a small school that had a JV that was basically the MS and varsity. 3 of us did the grades 7-9 ( if you were ANY good as a 9th grader you were on varsity) for about an hour and 15 right after school. Then when the HC and DC got back from driving their bus routes, me and 1 AC went to varsity. The other JV coach made sure all the JV kids got home.

So I guess I shouldn't complain and just find a way!

We've done a little of that in the past but always had guys to coach the middle school at team time. We might have to look into that 2-2 split as well.

We coach 7-12 football as do all in small school ball around here How do you organize practices? How many coaches do you have total? Also, when you're doing individual (I assume all together) how do you spend time so your older kids are getting quality reps and you're not spending all the time on the youngsters since they need so much more instruction? Thanks.

Sr. High is last period and after school. We will bring some 9th graders back after school if we need some extra bodies. If I knew your specific situation I may be able to help. We had to practice jr high with high school some this year because I was installing a new offense here with limited time due to covid. We have 4 coaches total and 1 of those shouldn't be a coach

We have 4 coaches as of today but hoping on at least 1 more. We don't the luxury of any school time with any of the groups. I'm guessing, if it comes to it, that we'll have to do individual periods all together and then split group and team periods up and divide up coaches. I'm hoping it doesn't come to this but trying to prepare for if we don't find anyone.

Or vice versa depending on your demographics.... That way you can coach both efficiently without having to do the babysitting. I was at a BIG school that had to do this b/c of coaches, or lack thereof.

When I was in HS we got out of school at 2:50.
The JV practiced right after school with the coaching staff and then the varsity came out at 5:00.
We did that b/c about half the football team drove school busses for the school b/c the HC was also the local school bus administrator.
Yes you heard that correctly... I drove a school bus before and after school my junior (16 years old) and senior year (17 years old).

Shouldn’t need more than an hour total for them. Then have 9-12 with all 4

I think that could be a good fix. 1st session 9-12 lift first with 7 & 8 on the field for group & team / 2nd session - individual combined (at times separate) / 3rd session varsity group and team Just have a lot of reorganizing in my practice plans to do.
